Bring Back Gas From Point Roberts

My gf drives a Corolla, I drive a Civic.

Nowadays, gas price is so high, we alternate once pre week going down to PR to get gas. (This week, My car gets filled, Next week her car gets filled)

We were thinking about buying 2x 20L(Civic/Corolla is only 50L) Gas Can in Canadian Tire and bring back to fill the other car. So we don't have to go every week but just once every 2 weeks.

My question is

1. If we bring 40L of Gas in 2x Gas Can, do we need to declare or say anything to the border guards?

2. If we do need to, will we get taxed?

Thanks RS

1. Anything purchased in the states, and brought back, has to be declared

2. Maybe. It's up to the guard. The gas in the cans isn't exempt.

General-Frequently Asked Questions

" 5.What duties will I have to pay? Am I responsible for the GST/HST?
Unless exempt, all commercial goods entering Canada are subject to customs duty and the goods and services tax/harmonized sales tax (GST/HST). Depending on the goods or their value, other charges or taxes may apply including excise duty on items such as tobacco products and excise tax on items such as gasoline, diesel fuel and air conditioners for motor vehicles."

Also, it could be dangerous for you to have that much fuel in your car if anything happens during the trip.

We live in Richmond, 30~40 minutes from PR, we'll drive extra slow and around 8 oclock pm time, less traffic

I guess its depend on the guard's mood

40L of gas is about $45~$50 CDN

its about $6 of HST Tax and will the guard care that much of $6

Or is it not calculate that way?

I did it just fine, i use tricky could be mistaken tactics though.
Boarder: "What did you buy?"
me: "just filled up my tanks with gas."

bwhaha so if they do search and find the 2x20L i have in the trunk i just tell them i told the guard i filled them up, and next time ill be more specific. but havnt had to do that yet

It's not worth the hassle to not declare the gas. I've made trips to fill up weekly for the past couple of months and have no issues with bringing back jerry cans.

My 3 Q. How do Canada Border Custom Tax you?

I feel they are all so lax, ive never talked to a guard for longer than a minute compared to the peace arch guards where they searched me and asked if i take any drugs. pleaded the fifth and they gave me the fucking hardest time ever.

Price of item in Cdn and HST which is 0.12 not 1.12 + any applicable duty.

Its applicable taxes .. I believe all taxes combined work out to about $0.35/liter. If you do get taxed, the tax on 40 Liters is about $14 dollars.

Usually you can get by the border with a $100 purchase (which will net them about $12 of tax) ....

BTW PR guards will routinely open your trunk to check for jerry cans. Be honest, they won't bust your ass over $14 of tax.

Every time you fill up in the States Vs Canada, you saved about $10~$15

It adds up.

You fill up 3 times in the States, the next tank is pretty much free. In Canada is the same as filling 4.

Doesn't matter what car you drive. Would you rather pay buy 3 get 1 free or buy 4

Not everyone born into a rich family, but we do what we can to save up.

I lol at you for having poor financial planning on some of the basic you can save up.

Every dollar adds up, and even every penny adds up.

Have you ever seen the movie where this guy stole a penny from every bank accounts which in the ends it adds up to more than a Million dollar

However, if you are some one who depends on your family's money, I lol at you for failing in life

^We have a Fit and a Yaris To save more money, buy your jerry can in the US, Fred Meyer or Walmart should be under $10 for a 5 gallon can.

The last couple times I've been down to PR to pick up packages, I just fill up the 1 can we have. Next time I'm in Bellingham I'm going to pick up another can. 2 cans should be fine to bring back without any trouble since I've seen people fill up 4+ 5 gallon cans and I'm assuming they do it somewhat regularly. We haven't been pulled in for <$250/person on a daytrip in 3+ years.

Its pretty hard for me to justify going down just for gas, since I calculate that it will cost me about $7 in gas and about 2 hours of my time to make the return trip from Kits. So if I save $0.25/L on a 40L tank, its a $10 savings which is really only an actual $3 savings including my gas consumed on the trip. With 2 jerry cans on top, it will be a ~$13 savings which is more significant, but I'd like to think my time is worth more than $7/hr lol. But if I have a package to pick up, may as well get some cheap gas

I just bring a 25L with me occasionally.
Going through the border I just say "Just went down to get gas"... so i guess it's ambiguous enough lol

You couldn't pay me to regularly consume US milk. Not worth the savings in my opinion.

Frugality does not make you better than another person so there's no need to talk down. Someone could tell you that you have no money sense because you spend 2 hours saving $20-$30 when you could be working and making more lol.

If savings is an issue, perhaps you and your girlfriend should consider alternative means of transportation such as public transit and/or bicycling.

It only takes 1 hour back and forth to go PR and back.

I'm 22, with only a certificate, working on my bachelor nightly base, already have a full-time job, making 40K / year been working for a year now.

paid for purchasing my car, paying for rent, paying for grocery, paying for tuition and etc...

Every pennies count.

Consider how translink raised their fair cost, how buses are never on time, always full people, people getting sick and coughing, transfer & slow to get to one destination to another.

Sorry, a car would be the better transportation means.
