in a city like vancouver, one should so rarely eat at places like those, GC's shouldn't be desired...

now, i'll get loads of fails for htat - but hey, vancouverites always go on about what a great culinary city this is - i'm just trying to prove it

In the suburbs, your options are much more limited. People hate on chains like Cactus and Earls, but they're good at what they do - produce consistent food in a modern, but non-offensive atmosphere with eye-candy.

If I want a gourmet burger, there aren't many places who do it well at a reasonable price. Romer's probably has the best chuck, but it's going to cost me about $20 and a drive into Kits. On the other hand, I could walk to Cactus (either from home or my office downtown) and get the Feenie burger (which is pretty good) for about the same price and get some eye-candy to boot.

don't disagree with you - living in the 'burbs you still get some options, but not that many - with earls/cactus club you will get consistency.

for me, food needs to be better than 'consistent' - but i love good food

^ Unfortunately, good independent restaurants cannot offer promotions such as these because their margins are already quite thin. And while RS is full of foodies, not everyone can afford to be one (eating good quality food at restaurants can be expensive.)

Nevertheless, this thread will be handy as I'm sure a lot people will need to thank clients and so on over the holidays.

It's already listed up top.

Added new offer from Krispy Kreme.

Man I can't see why people hate on cactus anymore...

I use to think they were shit 5 years ago and never went back. Went to the one in yaletown a few weeks ago after a friend kept talking about how awesome it was and they have really really improved their menu and food quality.

Feenie has been pretty instrumental in their turnaround, I think.

Vancouver has a disproportionate amount of foodies and I think they have a tendancy to think their opinion is gospel. Personally, I don't mind the food at Cactus Club, but it's a place that attracts the best and worst of Vancouver - class and trash. But, if you can check your ego at the door, Cactus on a Friday night is a great place to people watch, particularly if you're at Bentall or Yaletown.

Turnaround?

I think you're mistaken. Cactus was already a really successful operation, but Rob Feenie was essentially the poster boy to push it into the Elite - Rising above the other casual dining restaurants.

5 years ago, I thought Cactus already had great food items. Rob Feenie has brought in a handful of dishes: Rob Hunter Chicken, Duck Club, Salad, etc.

Rob Feenie is just another marketing strategy to differentiate Cactus Club from the Casual dining market. Iron Chef? TV Personal? Bam.
