| My father just lost his job...how am I going to pay for college?
It came as a real bolt from the blue. He works for a company that does laundry and dry cleaning for luxury hotels in downtown, but they just lost a big contract and couldn't afford to keep him full-time. He's in the process of collecting EI, the works.
I want to go back to school in September, and Co-Op is a long way off. How can we pay for college in the meantime? I really don't want to take out loans, but if I have to, I have to. My mom works on weekends, if it makes a difference.

I'm sorry your dad had to lose his job.
You should get a job now. Then take out a student loan.

Student loan with full time school, and pay it off after you graduate.
or
Student loan with full/part time school + part time job, and pay some off as you go.

Exactly what the others have said. You will learn a lot just from having to plan and prioritized and in the end be much more independent.
Besides your parents are here to help provide you a better life but it shouldn't be entirely their responsibility. Posted via RS Mobile |

Techinically speaking your paretns can kick you out after you turn 19.
Be graceful you still get a roof under their watch.
Get a student loan, work part time while going to school. If you have a car sell it and take the bus instead. You get a U-pass from most colleges and university so use it. Don't spend on parties or clubbing coz you have no money for that.

Besides the student loans, and part time job options, have you considered applying for provincial and federal government grants for students?
Apply to get free money from the government. Check out this website: Grants and scholarships - StudentAidBC

I don't know about you, but when I can I try not to rely on my parents. If it comes down to it, there's nothing wrong with taking out a student loan.
If you want it bad enough, take transit, work part time during school and full time when you are out of school, and pay it off along the way. As mentioned above, you won't have time or the money for booze etc.

at 17 my dad passed away and my mom moved to another province.. i worked fulltime and finished highschool while paying for a place for myself and sister too live..
man up, get to work, take out a student loan.
this isnt the end of the world and it will only make you stronger when you come out the other side. you can only work with what you have and you have many options.

My question is why are you expecting your parents to solely pay for your schooling? Go get a job, drop the sense of entitlement and pay you're own way, lots of students work ft or pt and go to school at the same time. Get a loan too if working won't cover it all.

Get a job. Now is the best time to learn time management, money management, responsibility, accountability, and the value of a hard earned dollar. Being a full time student is no excuse. Time to pay for your own shit and maybe even give back to the family a little. They probably need you to step up now more than ever. Posted via RS Mobile |

You getting the gist of what everyone here is saying? Get a job. I, like many, many others, worked while going to school to pay for it. Don't be a leach on your parents, even if your dad never lost his job you should still be doing something to take the burden off of their shoulders, instead of relying fully on them to support you. Time to GROW UP my friend, pull your own weight.

Either get a job and pay for school...
...or just get a job and forget about school.
There's plenty of people at college in the same situation. This isn't anything new.

Student loans are the easiest and simplest solution.
Grants
Scholarships
I got lucky when I graduated high school and got a full scholarship ride for Uni. However, my current go-around is all student loans. They'll give you enough for your school plus living expenses. Easy process, but it does take a few weeks before it's finalized.

Get a student loan....I quite enjoy my student loan payment of $700\month...keeps me grounded.
On a side-note: try to avoid talking a gov't student loan. They give you too much and being young means you will spend it all. Take a student line of credit through the bank....it is easier to manage and easier to pay back.
Also, if you are living at home and have your expenses covered (food, utilities, etc) get a job and pay for your own tuition. You can make enough this summer to pay for your next year. Sell your car (if you have one), don't take a vacation, don't drink your money away, and save every penny.

Yeah, high student loan payments can be a huge burden, especially if you're newly graduated from school and still need to work your way up the chain.

This post really rubbed me the wrong way.
At one point, both my parents were sick and I worked two jobs in the summer while taking classes just to keep everything afloat.
Did it suck? Majorly. But there will be times where you have no choice but to man up.
Being a full time student is no excuse for not having a part time job.
Your parents are slaving away just to put food in your mouth and a roof over your head. The LEAST you can do is pull your own weight.
Take out a loan. Get a job. Pay it off after grad. Give back to your family.
You're not entitled to anything.
