Insurance is for the most part regulated province to province and state to state, so there is no single golden rule.
Having said that, as the vehicle owner, unless you elect to pay for an endorsement unique to rental vehicles, I can promise your claim would be rejected in the event of a loss. While I have never priced out the endorsement for rental car coverage, I would imagine it's very expensive and would carry a very high deductible, no less than $5000.
Sounds like a great way to end up with:
- Smashed up car
- Paying out of pocket to repair vehicles and property of other parties
- Personal injury lawsuit for third parties
- Personal injury lawsuit for the operator who rented your vehicle
- Litigation as a result of subrogation
As the renter, in the event that you cause an accident, it would be reasonable to assume that both the vehicle owner and third party may pursue legal action against you for damage to property and bodily injury.
Sketchy IMO.

I dont see what the big deal is who travels to the states and doesn't buy travelers insurance? Just like renting any other car.

i'd much rather rent from avis etc. because of the insurance reason alone. with icbc if you have the correct insurance, you're covered in the event of an accident with a rental car in the states.

Yeah, I'm sorry, but I don't understand how you protect your car from people doing burnouts, launches, redlining, hard cornering, eating, drinking or smoking etc in your car. A lot of that stuff you would not see the immediate consequence from, just quicker wear and tear on your car.

In that case wouldn't it be similar to if you ANYONE other than you crashed your car? So if the car owner has the right coverage then it's no biggy. Which doesn't affect the renter.

What's the "right" coverage for someone taking your car and mowing over 10 people on a sidewalk? Do you know anyone that has or can even get $100 million plus third party? This is the USA we are talking about, where you can get $15 million+ dollars for a cup of coffee burning your lap... Giving your car to random people to drive on your coverage in such a litigious country is about as risky as it gets.
So I thought I would update this (remembered because of the AVIS thread).
I actually didn't go to Cali with my buddies, as I was there the week before for work, and rented a car like a normal person for tax purposes.
However my buddies ended up renting a Jeep while they were there, and overall said the experience was very simillar to renting a car through a regular rental place, but instead they got a way sicker car and the price was much fairer than a regular enterprise rental or whatever.
They said the turo people had everything handled at LAX, including getting the car, and returning to LAX once you give back the car. I think they have a lot in LAX as well where you can pick up cars just like a regular rental company.
Overall they said it was awesome, and they would do it again if there was ever a need.
