Radar detectors don't do shit. I've usually been paced or have claimed to have been paced. Been radar'd once (1/9). I drive crazy when i got a radar detector. Even as of late just getting dinged for 8 months.

radar detectors are definately a good thing to have but obviously won't save you all the time. i've been hit by cops who have turned their radar on at the last second and as i was just coming over a hill. thats 2 times in over 2 years of speeding often. the last time my detector saved me was when i was speeding out on the freeway in the middle of the night and a car comes ripping up behind me and we're both speeding along... detector goes off so i slow down and the other guy is doing like double my speed. cop gets him...
my detector is cheap too. cobra 6 band. paid $85 for it over 2 years ago

Yeah..radar detectors work extremely well if you know how to use them and you don't buy a shitty one. I've had my escort 8500 for about 2 years and I haven't had a ticket since. There are occasions where the cop will trigger you, but that just means you're not using the detector properly. It only works if there is a sufficient number of cars on the road. When the cop triggers a car in front of you, you'll be able to slow down in time. If there's nobody else on the road, it won't do shit. On long trips I like to get behind somebody that's speeding and follow about 500ft back. By the time the cop hits him, you'll have enough time to slow down.

i took a buddies 01 cbr 600 out the other day.. we got a 'quick acceleration kit' from vortex for it. made by vortex.
saved a buncha weight on the sprockets, gold rk chain, and dropped one tooth in the front.
1 less tooth in the front made for a much funner ride not a fan of the riding position on those bikes.. it feels.. to comfortable for some reason? lol

I'm moving to Kelowna!
honestly though, I used to use a radar detector, still got tickets. It's not hard to use them. beeep beep slow down. But when a ghost car pulls up behind you and can tell how fast you're going, you're busted.
Like I said..... .1/9 of my tickets used radar.... going 50 in downtown penticton. just got me somehow.
Now I just don't speed. My licence would be gone for a long ass time, and I don't need that.

I bought a radar decetor about a year ago... paid around $170 or so for it... so it's half decent. It has saved me a few times atleast, so it has paid for itself. But like everyone else said, you have to know how to use it, and you also have to know when you can speed, and when you can't.
I'm thinking of upgrading to a better one... how much is the escort 8500?

I just try not to speed, and when I do it's on a stretch where no cop can hide...

Escort 8500 is the pimp of radar detectors.
On my trip to vancouver it saved me 3 times from certain tickets. one time before I had even left kelowna. Goin up glenrosa road doin about 80, comming up to a corner it went off so I hammered the brakes, half way around the corner there was a cop heading in the opposite dirrection.
Another time as I was comming to a crest of a hill on the Coke, it went off and there was a radar trap down the other side. that one woulda been a big ticket.

i have a cheap radar detecter and its saved me many times, but i got my lastest speeding ticket given to me by a ghost car that was pacing me. i was in Vernon and this car was fellowing me from the city centre to the dealership stretch where i got busted. my detecter beeped couple times as i was leaving the city, i checked around and didnt see a cop so i didnt think much of it. then i was driving along and the car behinde quickly catches up and right then i knew something was up and the lights came on.
how much does a Escort 8500 cost btw

the passport is about $500 and I think Future shop is the only place that sells it in Canada...not sure though. Quote:

| That's the misconception, and the reason they don't work for some people. You have to make sure there's enough cars around you that the cop will likely activate his radar within range before reaching you. There's never a sure bet, but detectors are as close as it gets.

I've only been nailed by radar once downtown in heavy traffic, and only been in cars that get nailed on the highway. I can kinda see it useful in someways on the highway.
