QUESTION: i just bought a new computer, and I like everything else about it, except the ad (which I have with me as well as the receipt) says plain and clear it is supposed to have a dvd burner, but it doesn't, so what types of legal leverage do I have with false adverstising on an item worth several hundred dollars? I want to go demand to have one put in for free because of the false adverstising, but I don't know if they'll just say return it and get a new one, which I don't want to do because school starts tuesday which means I'll have ABSOLUTELY no time to shop around for another one.

ANY help you guys can give would be great. Thanx!

if it's within 15 days of purchase, return the computer.. that is unless it was from a small store that sneaks "final sale" onto the receipt. where was it bought from?

yay, thankfully they're putting a dvd burner in for free, and I didn't have to get all pushy with them! Now, I have another question, what are some of the things that you're supposed to do when setting up a new computer. I've done the windows updates, set a restore point, and when I get my dvd burner i'll be doing my recovery disks, but I guess there is something that technicians charge for to setup your computer when you first get it, so any other ideas on what I should be setting up or have I covered everything?

install spybot and ad aware. get them from download.com. plus make sure your windows firewall is up

ummmmmmm, thanx guys, but not quite what I was thinking, lol. I did do tech support for a couple months there, lol. I've got a security suite that has all of that including spam blocker. No, I was thinking as far as just the operating system. I talked to a tech, and he said the initial setup process should have taken a couple hours and I was just wondering what could take a couple hours when configuring it. He did mention something about the "appropriate updates" which I thought would have been the windows updates. I couldn't see doing driver or other hardware updates independently.

RedCeli 09-05-2005 06:37 PM

a couple hours...Probably the windows installation, which should already be done.

I was just posting that cause netfreak posted about adware and spyware and forgot to include virus protection in his list.. I know ur not a dummy, I mean u do know ur age, lol.. just kidding :D

WSODgirlracer 09-05-2005 07:13 PM

Thanx guys by the way.I guess if something goes wrong i'll work from that point on, as far as it goes right now everthing works fine so I can't imagine I need to do anything else. Thanx to hampton by the way!

P.S. Troy, that's what ryan was thinking it could be too, but it is already installed so maybe that's all the tech was talking about.

it all depends on how safe you feel your computer is. i've never had a virus scanner installed on my personal pc, and i continue to use it daily with internet/p2p/email downloads without incident. every now and then i'll run antivirus.com's free online scan just to make sure. the key is to have a good firewall/router setup, proper updates installed, and be smart so dont download porn images ending in .exe or .vbs :D
