350 USD? looks like you'll be paying about $45 in brokerage fees

http://www.ups.com/content/ca/en/shi...clearance.html

but then, that doesn't include the disbursement fees...

Ok this is where you go first. You pick up the papers @ 4831A Miller Road Suite 201. If u go on Miller Road its at the very end of the strip then make a left and another left. Once you get the papers u have to take it to Canada Customs which is also on Miller Road @ 113 - 5000 Miller Road. This is where u declare the item to them and pay your taxes(GST & PST). Then once u pay the taxes u get another form. From there u have to go to 5960 Ferguson Road to pick up your package. If you know how to get Iona Beach, its the same way. Then u park at their staff parking and go into customer service and pick up your item. Done. If you have any questions u can PM me.

actually it doesnt matter,
if they come to your door, just tell the delivery guy that you will clear customs yourself and he'll bring it back to the warehouse.
Or you can call the 1800 number and let them know u'll clear it yourself and they will notify you when you can do the paperwork

The UPS depot and its brokerage office is no longer there at 4831 Miller.
Both are now located at the same facility at 5960 Ferguson Road which is on the north side of YVR. Hang a right at the first set of lights after coming off the Arthur Laing.

Customs is still at 5000 Miller Rd #113
GST, PST, and duty still stands

You can see if there is an applicable duty associated with your
imported item in the Tariff (the broker's bible!):
http://www.cbsa-asfc.gc.ca/general/p...06/01-99-e.pdf

for simplicity, just look under the MFN column. the preferential column implies you have a certificate of origin from the country you exported from to claim a better rate in certain situations.

With more and more people bringing in items from abroad, especially car parts etc.. in our case, we seem to frequently get these 'clear customs' and 'brokerage' issues.

they are simply buzzwords in the biz. when you clear customs, two processes are done:

-create a RMD: a Release on Minimum Documentation report.
For those that self-clear, this is that package you staple together at Customs that has the cargo manifest and blue B3 printout.
*depending on what you bring in, a second 'release' authorization may be required from Agriculture, Transport, Health, Wildlife or Industry Canada before an RMD is submitted.

-and classify the items on your invoice with a tariff code
to determine how much duty/tax to pay
in order to obtain a 'release'.

the broker is essentially charging for all that prep work. Although, they do have the luxury of using an online system. If you see 'dispersement fee' or 'bond fee', this is basically a service charge of the broker to bear your duty/tax you owe to the goverment on their bond. This is why you will get a bill from the brokerage of the courier company you used rather than from Revenue Canada.

What may be shocking to many is that there is no set regulation in the Customs Act as to how much brokers are allowed to charge- which is the root of the evil! if you can afford to sacrifice the time and patience, self-clearance is the way to go (you didn't hear it from me )
