As much as my own MR2 stays in the garage, 827 Miles over 13 years just can't be good. Why buy the car in the first place.

Is the driver's seat showing signs of wear on the edge there I see? Also note questionable lower corner of shift boot. Possible wear indicator also.

Think further ahead into the future... what are you going to do when you graduate BCIT and need a reliable car to get to work? Priorities and circumstances change, especially when you are dealing with tuition. From the time I started school until gradution, my fees went up about 100%. They probably will continue to increase.

I know it can be tempting to want to buy a new car, but you aren't going to show 'those guys' anything if you have to get a loan from your parents to buy your car.

Is the MR2 an awesome car, yes. I've been a passenger in 68style's 2 and it pulls just as hard as my car but brakes and handles waaay better. I've love to own one, but I'm going to have to work a long time before I can afford it. Paying rent, food, student loans etc really eats up a lot of money.

I know it sucks to see the other guys in high school driving nice cars, I drove an 84 Civic that was a hand-me down from my sister all through high school (graduated in 98) and halfway through university.

Consider yourself lucky to be able to drive a 97 Sunfire. You'll never have to worry about the rust holes in the floor getting the carpet soaking wet.

Just some random thoughts. I'd like to see hypa weigh in here too because he always has some good advice about this kind of thing.

those "bastards" im referring to are my aunts on my dad's side..but lets not get into that.
i'd drive the sunfire for as long as I need to, but with the money im earning, I want to be able to use it to get my own car.
I'm probably one of the luckier ones cause my parents totally back me on this, and would consider getting a new 4 door car if they could afford/I helped out. I've heard alotta advice on used cars and such, which is why my aprents would rather get something for both themselves, and me, a powerful 4 door, if and when I give up on the "my own car" thing.

And besides, if I got the MR2, the only people i'd ever need to drive is myself, or gf, when I go out. Dont have to deal with the "YOU DRIVE LIKE SHIT!, I'm driving next time" or "FUCK GO PAST 60 FOR ONCE!!!" (im a verry cautious driver )

As for the future, its already been paid for, m college funds scale around 11,000. Thats more than enough for school, and by the end of the year I get the rest of it back for my own personal use. And thats for every year. If I take aviation mech, and some other courses related to cars and stuff, ill still have alotta money given back to me by the end of each year, for 4 years or so.. not to mention ill be working during that time.

Maybe he just likes to sit in the thing and play with the shifter

30 Gs?
Live mid-market rates as of 2004.07.23 04:59:38 GMT.
17,000.00 USD 22,380.30 CAD
United States Dollars = Canada Dollars
1 USD = 1.31649 CAD 1 CAD = 0.759597 USD

and with bout 827 miles on it.. its probably the only one with less than 1000 kms. Engine's barely been used.. so I dont think it'll need alotta repairs..

I sure hope he replaced all the hoses, a car sitting that long is sure to have the rubber hoses all rotted out.

LOL, you obviously haven't had to replace them on a vehicle -- not to mention it's the installation that costs too not necessarily the parts...

Don't forget all the seals and gaskets would have gotten hard too -- it could potentially need $3000+ of engine work if it hasn't been stored perfectly. I seriously doubt the valve seals are in good shape.

Also of note when you import a vehicle into Canada from the U.S. like the MR-2 that was built in Japan you have to pay 21.6% taxes in total. Suddenly your $23,000cdn is now $28,000cdn -- so the guy who said $30,000 was about right.

lol... ever heard of the hose from hell? A little $5 hose that's maybe 2" long and costs about $600 in labour to replace cuz you have to remove the exhaust manifold to replace the little bugger. It's between the turbo and the block right above the cat.

you're forgetting shipping, brokerage fees, duty, excise tax, and most importantly, GST and PST. it's a lot closer to $30,000 than you'd think.

people posting in this thread are giving good advice. don't get a car like this until you are financially and mentally ready to do so. I know it's tempting; you fall in love with a car, calculate everything out, find that job that pays $x/hr..... but sometimes life just doesn't turn out that way. Shit happens, and you don't want to be stuck with dumping all your savings into a car that will be worth next to nothing when you sell it.

the mr2 is not an easy car to drive either... the turbo especially. If you haven't driven a mid-engined, rwd car before, you could be in for some damage... especially since you're young. If you don't believe me, just look at the amount on mr2s on the market that have been in some sort of accident... the percentage is very high.

wait a year or two and see what happens. If I am reading right, you don't even have a steady job yet, and you're already planning out your future car's mods?

Del Slow?

Probably a bit more practical and financially easing on the maintenance side while allowing myriad tuning options.

I'd say go for the Del Slow.
