You don't necessarily need a DSLR to get "real" HDR shots. All you would need is a camera that has manual controls to bracket your exposures. Those are easily had for much less than investing in a DSLR system.

1983 Z28: Nice post, sharp photos. Post processing definitely fits the feel of the tank. Could use less extreme angles on the last few.

Really huh. Would you mind shedding some light as to what kind of camera / equipments I need, in order to shoot HDR, without investing heavily into a DSLR?

Hyuck hyuck.
And I know the angles such, and I would've liked to pull back a bit... but the tank was just sitting in a parking lot, and I was trying to avoid getting any of the crowd directly to the tank's left in the pics... likewise with the giant army truck covered in blue tarp. I'll be going back to drive it in the first weekend of December, so I should be able to get some good photos of it in a nice big muddy field then.

You simply have to expose for different parts of the picture and then blend them together in HDR software (i.e. Photomatix or Photoshop). Best also if you have a tripod, but as long as you can make sure you don't move the camera from spot to spot then you're fine. There's a thread on HDR currently active right now in this forum. Quote:

^ With HDR Photo's, don't you need to shoot them in RAW? I thought I read this somewhere, and most P & S's don't have this function.

^^that's exactly what I thought. Also, most P&S don't support manual adjustments either? I mean my Sony T20 has some simple EV settings, but that's pretty much it.

the newer canons have a function which allows you to have more manual controls on aperture and shutter speed. i believe the G series and S series of canon (canon g9, g10, s5 is) have these.
i'm not sure about other brands but most likely they also have models which have more manual controls

The proper way to do it is to take 3 separate pictures exposed differently

And HDRs taken from a single RAW file never really look quite right.

I agree. But my T20 can't take RAW files, only jpgs.
I am looking for a fairly affordable, yet decent SLR to take HDR photos with. Any specific recommendations?

OLYMPUS!!!!!11111!!!11!
I love mine. Yeah, the sensor is small blah bah blah, but they give you a damn fine amount of features for the money.
EDIT: Really, you can sorta go with whomever you like. Obviously, I like Oly, but that's just me. I've only used Oly and Canon, and I found Oly to offer me more features for less money, but the flip side was that I had to learn how to use them all. But hey... just try 'em all!

Got a ride in this beast today, the original plan for the both of us was to make some videos then park the car for a quick photoshoot, but ran out of time. I snapped these 2 pictures before he left.
