What settings should I have used? | If there is poor lighting, you can try leaving the shutter open longer, but a tripod is crucial for this because you can't keep the camera completely still for 10+ seconds.
Put camera on av (or aperture priority), set aperture to f/8 or so (or wide open if you want to blur the background), compose, set focus point, and let the camera calculate shutter speed, and make note of how long it opens the shutter for.
If the picture is still too dark, change it to manual, change all settings (Aperture, ISO) to what it was in av, and manually increase shutter speed.
If you have an external flash, there's a "test fire" button that will just strobe the flash and while the shutter is open you can move around the car and light it from the top using this to artificially create overhead lighting.
Also, taking long exposures, especially under sodium lights, will make your picture very yellow and generally unpleasant, so try shooting in raw to make adjustments later, or just post-process the jpeg you took in photoshop to adjust the colour |

The lighting wasn't low enough to justify a tripod; I just couldn't get the settings I wanted. Thanks for the info! |

I don't have an external flash But yeah, I tried out long exposure up on Cypress, played between 10 and 20 seconds. Turned out ok, but there was snow on the lens =\ |

Just got my charger back for my d60 after a 3 or 4 month period, and spent the last few hours watching tips and tricks for shots. Coupled with some new car parts ordered and I can't wait to shoot. Heres a couple old shots from right before I lost it. I don't know much yet, but I'm looking forward to learning.

Girlfriend and I attempted to do some Interior Light Trails yesterday but kinda came up unsuccessful. Biggest difficulty was camera shake, even when going super slow. Exposure was at 1 second, shooting wide open at 10mm. Do you guys have any tips on perfecting this kind of picture and how to reduce camera shake? Maybe ill try a VR lens. Thx guys
