because of the "pan" it looks like a painting or a sketch haha

Hey guys..
First digital camera (about time eh ), first time using new digital cam, first time using aperture/shutter speed, first time playingaround with focus etc etc.. basically a complete newb... LOTS of feedback would be appreciated lol.. I need to learn how to use this camera properly.
Oh.. and yeah I tend to PS a little on the dark side. Bad habbit I'll probably have to break out of but I just like the richness of darker/contrasted photos. Anyways I've seen lots of amazing pics around here so hopefully I can learn a thing or two.
Thanks in advance.

sYnth,
In your first picture, the light background distracts me from your subject. What might have been better is if you metered for the bricks on the ground and then recomposed it for the car. It would take down the blown out white of the background lighting.
Just food for thought.
The last picture of your first post could probably have benefited with a fill flash of some sort... either take down the flash intensity (if you can adjust it) and use the night mode or if you are using it manually adjust for a longer shutterspeed after the flash.
Good work. Keep practicing!

metering means to take an exposure reading.
When you point your camera at an object and push the shutter down halfway you get an exposure value consisting of shutter speed and aperature. That is a meter reading. It changes depending on the light or any manual setting applied to it. If it's on auto then the meter will register what the camera thinks is right. Doesn't always work. Meter off of something neutral, but in the same light and it will help your exposures in difficult lighting situations. Quote: Originally posted by sYnth. Another quick question... On that same first pic I wanted more of a blur on the background. What else can I do for this effect? I lowered the Aperture but I'm not sure what else I can do to exaggerate the focus on the foreground. I'm using a Canon S80. Thanks in advance.

You could theoretically try standing back and zooming in to the same picture. Although the distance between the building and car might seem closer...

hmm i was thinking if you zoomed out as much as possible and got as close as possible, then focussed on the car, you could probably acheive better results w/ having a shallower DOF
then again what do i know!
