GST and duty at the border. PST when you register the vehicle with ICBC.
You only have to pay Washington tax if you want to get the "title" in your name in the state of Washington. Which is pointless, although it might save you from paying some taxes in Canada if you already "own" it, and it's registered in your name in the states. I'm not quite sure.

Have modifications been covered in this thread? Curious about aftermarket exhausts, headers and little bolt on things? If the vehicle is supposed to be completely OEM stock before import, which is what the rules say, could one import the car and change those components once it's in Canada? Say before the inspections take place? Or would the border put a full stop on the process if aftermarket parts are noticed?

Guys need a quick response if possible.
I'm eyeing a car in Calgary and I plan to fly down to view/inspect it. What will I need to be able to drive it back to BC and register the car? Can I get a temporary insurance from Alberta or is there more to consider? The seller can transport it for $500 but I think I'll have much more fun driving it back. Anything else I should look for?
Found this from ICBC about VI from Alberta too.
"Under the New West Partnership Trade Agreement (effective April 1, 2015), qualified private vehicles imported from Alberta or Saskatchewan may be exempt from the BC pre-registration safety inspection. Please ask your Autoplan broker for details."
Thanks in advance.

Can you still do the export/import process yourself when buying a car from the US?
I did it 7-8 years ago but some people are telling me a broker is required now. This is for a 30+ yo car, if it matters.
Thanks

Thanks | I just imported a 20+ year old car from WA. I had to go through a broker to get an export number (ITN). You could sign up for the AES system and do some education and tests to be able to get ITNs yourself however.
The only "confusing" step was that both US and Canadian border websites say I need a warranty/recall letter, but when I did the paperwork at the Canadian side, the guy who did it said it's not needed.

Thanks.
How much did the broker charge? Can you post or pm who you used please?
Yeah 15 years and older shouldn't require RIV. Registrar of Imported Vehicles - RIV Exemptions

I created a thread before seeing this thread, Doh!
Im going through the final stages of purchasing my S15 Spec R from Japan and I was looking to start planning costs once it's arrived here.
Has anyone imported a Nissan Silvia S15 before? I'd like to find out how much you paid at the border & Broker (GST, PST and Duty). Im unsure if the PST and duty is calculated from the sale price e.g what I bought it for at the auctions in Japan or from a market evaluation, ICBC and my broker are telling me conflicting info.
Im aware of the other charges as well but feel free to post them if you know them, just in case ive missed something.
Im looking to make a guide once its here to help more people import and this info will help a bunch!
Cheers

For anyone looking to import a vehicle from the US to Canada, you can use this website to file for your ITN for $35 USD. Livingstone Int'l charges $75. https://simplifiedtradesolutions.com/
Their website also has the necessary information and documents on how to submit to US CBP depending on which port you choose to import the vehicle through and their unique instructions of each port of entry.
