buying and holding is great! If you bought at lows and sold some along the way up.
But if you bought near the highs like waddy, holding for news is risky; you might as well go to the casino and play roulette, black or red.

well I think my odds are still better than 50/50
If short term price drops, I then re-evaluate that position and decide to either sell for a loss or hold and wait

Just picked up some SMB-V as an area play.
In Sierra-leone/Libera. Surrounded by Chevron and Anadarko.
Anadarko just announced they found 41 metres of sweet crude. At 7 million market cap, I see it as a decent spec play.

I browse Hsm, tradingchief, and stockhouse.
But for research I read everything.
I found Simba Energy by just googling canadian oil juniors in liberia. And I just go from there.
Simba has a decent prospect, 25% institutional holding and very interesting how its' near some big players. Then again, these kind of plays take patience.
Another play I'm looking at is Nwest energy (@25cents and market cap of 2.5 mill), I posted it earlier but the story is getting better. Low float outstanding, company is in the vicinity of some soon to be action. CQV-V is finally about to drill their shale (market cap of 38 mill).
I figure Nwest is going to do a financing here soon since they did a reverse split to increase the share price and reduce dilution.

ouch' - I manage to get out of a couple plays for a loss.
Might use this opportunity to pick up some better stocks, i.e// tag oil, etc.

China on the other hand is probably jumping up and down laughing.
EDIT - TAG's offering is ending soon, can't wait to see what will happen. Too bad I went in at $6.02, FFFFFFUUUUUUUUUUUUU.

some of you guys are looking at companies that do not have established mining guys running it, you guys buy in and hope the stock prices will go up then dump right away. My advice if you chose this model is to find stocks that are volatile so at the very least you have volume which will allow you to day-trade it.
There are a few companies in town that are set up solely to bankroll mining companies, taking them from prospecting and discovery all the way to selling off to a major or mine building.
The majority of the junior mining companies will do nothing so you must follow the people that have past successes - there are only a handful of people in Vancouver that can raise big money: the Seltzers, Guistras and Friedlands of the world. You will also find the private companies that take companies public doing all the legwork - hunter dickinson group would be one of the more famous local companies so check out its stable of miners . In mining past success is a good indication of future success so you're going to need management and board members that are operators. I personally stay away from boards stacked with CAs and legal people as it only shows one thing - adversity to risk.
I'm sure you guys follow the canucks - look at the owner, he sits on the board of Gold Wheaton.

+1 I've noticed some of you guys buying stocks based on recommendations here. DO research and don't follow blindly into some stock because some revscener raves about getting huge profits. Although there is great returns such as CAN, beware because mining stocks are extremely volatile and you could lose all your money.

No doubt management helps in the junior sector, but remember....We are playing the junior resource sector. Where 99% of them are crap.
The name of the game is to get in early and get out with a profit.
For instance, right now, we are practically in a small bull phase with commodities. You play what's hot or try to predict what's next.
What's hot right now, pretty much everything. Especially rare earths.
Realistically are rare earths even rare? No, they are abundant. Just the hype of China reducing exports. News get often blown out of proportion and you have a mania phase of unrealistic valuations.
What I'm getting at is, I hope no one is seriously holding a penny stock hoping for dollars. And I hope no one is actually taking these miner's seriously until these stocks have done something to prove otherwise.

awesome post sub....what's your take now on ROZ? still bullish for the long-term?
Can someone walk me through what steps they would go through to do DD on a junior miner?
What are your thoughts on MER? Does it have potential or is it a good day trader?

SUB: yea most of them are crap but thats ok as long as your aware of it, but there tons of good ones and there will always be
im thinking palladium will be the next big thing take a look at how well its performed
and for penny to dollar stock i see NVT being 5$ KIA being north of a dollar and VYC.P around 2$ not right away but very soon
NVT = ppl from frontier, with exclusive mining rights in ecuador
KIA = Guistra with huge zinc property
VYC.P = very good management (CFO same ppl)
TYE has some big player also that just picked up some property next to RVC (had this at 0.05 but was to impatient =[)

Rare earth is getting a lot of attention from around the world. With china exceeding export quotas, there will be high demand for these stuff from around the world and prices will soar.

What are your thoughts on MER? Does it have potential or is it a good day trader? | What most of these juniors need is a good following by stock writers.
Mer-v - Looks like good results, but they have over 2 million in warrants at 10 cents to exercise before Jan/11 expiration. So, that alone will put some selling pressure on the stock, combined with retail investors bandwagoning & no mainstream writers following the stock.
Overall, with tax-loss season, I don't think this will turn around anytime soon.
Roz-v - I think I had mentioned before, I sold all my warrants.
This company has a good insider holding, combined with 10 fold the prospects Tag oil had.
Only problem? Tag Oil had consistent mentions by Canaccords Pescod. And other names.
I would not be afraid to enter into a small position here, but I'm waiting a bit longer to see if the warrants lighten up. Because Macquarie did put a 5 dollar target on the stock. And they will be drilling in early 2011.
[On a side note: Glanced at the last 15 minutes of trading for Roz, looks like Macquarie was on buy, in good amounts. Possible higher share price in the upcoming days?

There's the bull phase, then the mania of the stock
I jumped back in to CIN-V again, since a nice story is developing there.
Not to mention, if they hit similar grades as their neighbour, spectrum mining, watch out.
