Good point:
Benedict Brogan, the Daily Telegraph's political supremo, says Greece's referendum move has really set the cat among the pigeons:
The worry is that the command of the Greek people to the EU might be to go stuff your austerity measures. Opinion polling shows that the Greek people are firmly against the package, a point underlined by the newspaper cartoons of Nazi-styled Germans forcing their medicine on Greece.

FAZ up 10% in premarket, yayyy! Let the whole market implode! FAZ is worst than gambling, it's gambling on other people's misfortunes. Right, so now, when will the wheels fall off the markets? Greece could default any hour now.

The markets here in Europe are in a state of panic, and for good reason. Over in America, I wonder what news the Fed meeting will bring.

If the first 10 minutes of trading are any indication, it's going to be an ugly day on the markets

The Greek PM is due to meet his MPs at 4pm GMT. Greece could be default by the end of today.

As perverse as this sounds, I wish Greece would default today and the market crashes. Get Greece out of the EU and start over. We're heading into a recession anyway, so this might be the trigger that is needed to get us there.

btw thanks. after reading some of the articles you posted yesterday, something made me want to sell my CSCO near market close. now it's down 5%.

greece shit.. fuck that | Watch out with FAZ. You have to literally be plugged into the news throughout the day. I'm doing some writing at the office, but in front of me I have live coverage pages from the Telegraph, Guardian, BBC, and the Reuters wire. It's intense work filtering through the news and the analysts to know when to buy/sell.

From the BBC rolling coverage, for those of you who can't access the BBC Live webpage
1911: Reuters has published an analysis piece which says the impact of Mr Papandreou's announcement should not be underestimated. "Any hope of a year-end rally or even stabilisation of world markets have now been doused", Michael Dolan writes. He cites Paul Mortimer-Lee, from BNP Paribas, who says: "Try as we might, there is nothing good to be said about this decision as it affects markets and growth over the balance of this year".
1901: Still no word from Athens, more than two hours after PM George Papandreou went into a cabinet meeting to discuss the crisis. His decision - announced on Monday night - to call a referendum on last week's EU aid package shocked European leaders and led to calls for his resignation in Athens.
1852: "One of the misleading paths would be to assume that someone else will bail you out. Europe has to solve its own problems. The United States has to solve its own problems, and Japan has to solve its problems," Mr Zoellick said, AP reports.
1850: The president of the World Bank, Robert Zoellick, has called Greece's proposed referendum a "roll of the dice" that will heighten uncertainty in financial markets. "The world economy is still wobbly... and it could dip very quickly if momentum is not maintained and built upon," Mr Zoellick said.
