My biggest loser: AAA

Bought @ 1.80
Sold @ 1.35

Currently @ 0.83

MisterMu 12-23-2011 11:53 PM

No losses this year :alonehappy:

Up 12% overall after cashing in on TD @ 69.61 and about to get a dividend in January.

My GF's portfolio consisting of purely TD preferreds are up around 8-9% this year as well.

SiRv was talking about cashing in on the ex-dividend dates and selling right after. Dividends are good if you plan to hold the unit for longer periods of time. However, if you plan to sell right after the ex-dividend date, the share price will have dropped already to reflect the paid out dividend so you just lost money on commissions for 2 trades.

As of today, I am down about 11%... but that mostly due to a long-term stock where I have a bigger position, so it doesn't make much difference to me.

Without counting that long term stock, I'm up about 13%.

Spoon 12-24-2011 01:57 AM

this year was certainly interesting though. portfolio was doing well up until august when europe happened and wiped out all my gains for the year and more. if i hadn't diversified earlier in the year into preferred shares and short term bonds, this year would've been drastically different for me.

i'm probably up 8-10% for 2011. most of it from investing in probably the least exciting sectors around (groceries/supermarkets being one lol).

jasonturbo 12-24-2011 11:12 AM

My TFSA is up 60.5% on the year, my cash account is up 19.9%.

Here is my disclaimer, though it may seem as though this is a great return, and it is, I was not in the markets at all between April 2010 and September 2011. I picked up some stock during the downturn in 2009, sat on it until April 2010 and dumped them all and decided that the bullish behavior in the markets would eventually subside and there would be an economic contraction... eventually, this fall, another buying opportunity came up and I jumped on it.

I missed out on making a lot of money while I was out of the markets, I should have at least invested in DFN or some other high dividend paying stock.. even some preffered shares... oh well.

Best of luck to everyone in 2012.

strykn 12-24-2011 01:34 PM

lol before august crash i was up 100%+ end year with ~20% gain :[

Carl Johnson 12-24-2011 02:52 PM

^ all because BPAX?

Up 17% for this year, but I was up as much as 25% at one point. Not too bad but not as good as I have done in past few years. Looking for a lot more in 2012.

jasonturbo 12-24-2011 02:59 PM

Anyone care to share some thoughts on URRE?

Once I get some time I will really start crunching the number for this one.., could yield a very good return..

leilomo 12-26-2011 11:52 AM

^for uranium names, I've got a lotta money in Cco, Uuu, and Dml. I would stick with the producers. This should be a good rebound candidate for 2012. Best of luck to everybody!

Also have my eye on ANR. Anybody have any thoughts on coal going into next year? It's been beaten down hard.

What's a good dividend stock? I was going to start putting money into Finning.

URRE has some good deposit. The main problem of them is that they are not a capital-heavy player, so they rely on heavy players like Cameco to go JV with any actual extraction.

I loaded about 30K share at $0.82 when it dropped... sold it at 1.27... now that's it's back down, I'm planning to buy either URRE or CCJ.

If you are not willing to bet, I'd say put your money on CCJ/CCO. It's still down more than 50% from pre-earthquake level.

The dividend on that looks like just <2% per year. CIBC is around 4-4.5% dividend per year. Stay with Canadian dividend payers, dividend payments also provide a nice tax break!

Iceman-19 12-26-2011 04:37 PM

Finning is Canadian, based out of vancouver. What about Canadian national railway? I'll check out cibc.

for 2012, fuck fundamentals, trade on psychology and purely on sentiment gonna be a good year. $$$

Iceman-19 12-26-2011 04:47 PM

hirevtuner 12-26-2011 06:17 PM

down about 18% this year on my portfolio, but kind of expected it due to the euro problems, hopefully can be up in 2012, good luck to all

highfive 12-26-2011 06:59 PM

Dividends - Almost any Canadian Telecommunications/banks/railways/foods are good.

I don't know about coal depends on China and if US approves nat gas. I like nat gas plays as nat gas is at $3 right now.

too_slow 12-26-2011 07:14 PM

Hey Ian, check out TSX:LIQ

Iceman-19 12-27-2011 05:09 AM

Wow thanks too_slow, that's a good one. Pretty solid? How do dividends work in relation to stock price? I know liquor stores are always going to be a solid bet, especially in Alberta, but would bell be a safer bet even though it's about a quarter of a percent lower?

For gas I've been keeping an eye on CEX and coal, I own 2165 shares in CPT.ajority were purchased at 1.36/share. It will open for production in 2014 I believe.

^^ is this sam?

Iceman-19 12-27-2011 06:07 PM

Me? I am not Sam I am, I do not like green eggs and ham.

jasonturbo 12-27-2011 07:25 PM

DFN, dividend 15 split corp... something to consider, you can expect nearly 1% monthly... at the risk of the fact that it is a split corp...

Can't wait for trading to resume.. god damn holidays.

2012 + Oil = Win.
2013 + Uranium = Win.
2014 + I dont care, will be retired by then.

If I'm wrong, meh, file for bankruptcy and start all over.
