Which one of the non-bank stock trading platforms is the quickest to open a TFSA with? There's a stock that I'm on a tight timeline to buy for.

I opened an account with questrade and it took 2 business days. Not sure if there's a faster one. RBC was one business day for me but I was already banking with them

Thinking of getting into MU (Micron technology); hasn't shown signs of resistance this past month and I was waiting for a pull back for a while lol

there might be some hype with airbnb but personally i'm not interested. housing is becoming an issue everywhere, and cities are becoming more restrictive with short term rentals. i'd say it's a gamble

Don't think anyone expected it to rebound that fast after the initial dip and to $70 in a week.
Last week was great because we all had GMHI before the LAZR merger and made some great gains.
We all currently have positions in RMG (Romeo Power) and BFT (PaySafe).

I joke that SPACs are real life money cheat codes right now. Enjoy it while it lasts.

Interested in hearing more about it, given it's local... anyone has some more in-depth information than what one could find online?

Carl Hansen, CEO of Abcellera, was my biophysics prof during undergrad at UBC. He is expected to become a billionaire once the IPO hits as he owns about a quarter of the company. He was a super nice guy and obviously really intelligent so I'm happy for him but at the same time, pretty shocked to witness someone I know become a billionaire lol. Abcellara already doubled the target size of its IPO and it would be the largest public financing by a Canadian biotechnology company.

Don't most IPO's spike because of hype then in the following week it settles to a market price before it's true colour show?

IPOs never open at cost.
AI was $42 and opened at like over $100, and DASH was $102 but opened at like $180.
If Abcellera is $18, I wouldn't be surprised to see it go live at $30. I don't even wanna guess what ABNB will be like today.

AbCellera is really interesting. I like that it is based more on a platform of allowing for drug discovery, rather than focusing on a few drugs. It is really the underlying technology.

Do you usually hold SPACs through merger date? Or is it not recommended? What's your target price for BFT and thoughts on APXT and GHIV? Quote:

Don't be a prisoner of the moment guys. IPOs don't always have glamorous pops on debut and appetite for IPOs are heavily dependent on market sentiment which is absolutely bonkers right now. Market is in such a crazy state of euphoria whether you look at it technically or fundamentally. You don't have to look far back to see what happens when the sentiment ain't so strong. Just look at how Uber and Lyft has performed leading up to IPO (had to price at low end of range) and at IPO (negative PnL on debut day) and after IPO (took more than a year for IPO investors to see positive PnL). Speaking of AirBnB, now it is worth more Marriott International Inc., Hilton Worldwide Holdings Inc. and Hyatt Hotels Corp. combined. If you want to ride the retail driven momentum, by all means, but don't try to pretend like you know what you are doing, you don't lol.

Out of interest, do you guys purchase US based stocks listed on the Nasdaq using Canadian or U.S funds? I have a U.S. chequing account and a U.S TFSA - wondering if it is beneficial to transfer the funds over to the U.S TFSA and purchase stocks that way, then I don't have to pay the exchange rate when purchasing?

1. Sell prior to merger
2. Self half and let the other half ride
3. Hold through the merger and hope it pops
Because I tend to buy in at a reasonable price point, I tend to hold through the merger.
If you get in close to NAV, most of them are usually around $20 by the time they merge or at least the ones I've been paying attention to. Depending on your entry point, it's some decent double digit gains even if you sell everything pre-merger.
The biggest thing with SPACs is the opportunity cost IMO. You could be waiting for months or years for an acquisition target, a merger vote, and the actual merger. A lot of things can happen in between these key dates. This is extremely true if you purchase a SPAC at near NAV prices like GHIV.
But yeah, everything is a gamble even SPACs, so don't make investment choices based on what I typed above because even I don't know what I'm doing half the time.
