no, MA70 & MA71 chassis are both widebody. Only the GA70 was narrow - it wasn't available in North America.

someone want to explain to me why, on my autometer temp sensor, if i put the wire up against the sensor with one nut, the gauge is completely fucking useless, but if i use two nuts and put the wire in between those two nuts, the gauge works perfectly?????

Would YOU want to work with only one nut?!

Anyway, with the whole VIN number thing - turbos start with JT2MA71 and NA's start with JT2MA70. I'm pretty sure the chassis code is MA70 through all the years. I wonder what chassis code the non-japanese RHD bodies have (JZA70,MA70, or MA71)?

I'm pretty sure the GA70 body had the 1G-GTTE motor.

BHG Update:

I went and talked to the shop that's fixing my BHG today. They showed me the old gasket, it was completely fucked at #1 and #6. The composite material was thrashed but the steel ring around the cylinders was still in good shape and the copper ring around the water jackets was a little chewed up.

They said that what they think caused the BHG is that my coolant went acidic (from being old ~2yrs) and it turned the aluminum head+iron block+conductive coolant into a "battery" that ate away the composite gasket material. Also my head bolts were all at around 54-58 ft-lbs.

Anyway, I should be back on the road tomorrow! w00t!!

MA70/MA71 were the chassis with the 3.0L 7M-GTE (GE for nonturbo).

the JZA70 was the same basic chassis with a 2.5L Twin Turbo 1JZ-GTE

the 1JZ was the precursor to the JZA80 (MKIV supra) 2JZ.

the 1JZ is becoming a popular choice among supra owners, its 8000 rpm redline and quick response make it a good engine for the heavy MKIII frame.

they're ready for me to pick it up in a couple of minutes. Here's my costs so far:

$375 - Toyota head rebuild kit (gasket set)
$13 - Thermostat
$90 - Machining head and replacing exhaust manifold bolt
$35 - oil and filter change @ the shop
$400 - labour (no tax, under the table)
-------
$913
====

I'll have to do another oil change in a week or so to get all the contaminants out, but I'll do this one myself rather than paying $35.

apparently my head was in really good shape aside from the missing bolt. They just scraped the gunk off, cleaned it, and lapped it. Did u guys get it ported or something while it was out?
