basically: every time you shift under boost, the bov opens. if it vents to the atmosphere, it is letting air out that the computer has already measured. so instead of being say 12:1 air:fuel, it loses air, so it hits 10:1 air:fuel. not really a problem, it just causes carbon buildup, and sometimes may lead to stalling. only problem i ever had was if i was boosting, then put the clutch in, if i didnt rev the engine a bit, it would sometimes stall. give it a quick tap on the gas, and problem solved. i also tightend thespring on my bov, which cured it for me.
edit: so much for that writeup, you already understand lol

about choosing BOVs, its more personal preference. HKS, Blitz, and Greddy all make quality product. each one sounds different, and has different advantages. i chose the HKS SSBOV after hearing it on Blakes celica (GT-Four on RS).

ok let me put into terms that is very easy to say in dore to gain that much carbon build upy ou have to be runing a very low octain gas in oder for it to build up lie that
but inoder for it build up as in gas soot it will have to very i mean very rich as in the point where you are pushing black and still then it get very hot in the comtion caber that it will just burn off
remmber high the octian the oil is in the gas and that is what caus ecarbon build up
take test take gas lay in ont he ground and burn it thenafter it all bunrt and left black spot take troch tot eh blakc crap and ti will just burn off there nto eghough oil in the gas in oder for it gum up

lol now now guys, no need to get fiesty. I would just run my stock valve but i was told its on its way out so im not so sure i want to run it for long... maybe i should replace it with the HKS SSQ BOV and route it back so it runs back thru the AFM ? I guess it defeats the purpose of a BOV but i guess it would still at least make for a good stock bypass valve replacement??

a broken afm will or if you blow an ic pipe
in all cause carbon is cause by oil and yor ring not seating right or you fill your car wiht to much oil or use really crappy oil adivies

easy way to cheak is take the stocker off and see if you can blow throw it at all drition if one way is block and cant then you bov is fine

just get the bosch bov unless you plan un running 15+ lbs boost in anytime in the near future.... all the other BOV's run more than 3x the value of a used bosch which can be found somewhat easily on forums...
altho the HKS SSBOV sounds best in my opinion.. if you're only planning on running stock boost there isnt much need for it. but it is progressive, so if you decide to turn up the boost down the road it will hold fine there, too.. ive run over 20psi on mine and it sounds crazy loud letting out all that air
owell check supraforums.com for sale section, maybe you can find something used and cheap

Well i plan on playing around with shimming the wastegate lots, right now its shimmed as is but im not sure what the kid has it set to run at. I think around 15psi right now? I will have to check with him before i buy it. But he did warn me already that the stock bypass valve is on its way out. Im not sure what he means by that exactly but ya. I will check to see if its ok still otherwise i will probably just end up buying an HKS BOV that you guys all talk about because it sounds like the way to go. I wont be running stock boost for long i can tell you that now lol...

Slate, if you're shimmed, you'd be running probably around 10-12psi, fuel cut is at 12..... and i wouldnt attempt to go much higher til you've re-done the headgasket and bolts, as you've probably heard its the fatal flaw of the mk3, and high boost can blow a 12+ year old headgasket in no time
in order to get it above 12psi you'll need fuel upgrades, injectors, AFM housing, etc
