KultZero, you'll have a bit of a hard time finding a good condition 89+ for under 8k. maybe try and get something older and then get the bumpers, light covers, spoiler and such from a 89+

major changes are hard to spot unless you know your supra's, but if you see two parked beside eachother its easy enough to spot....

89+ body style(also my car)

86.5-88 style

this guy did the conversion from a 87 to 89+ body style..... altho i think he crashed it

hope that sorta helps...

--
btw thanks Nashman, i'll probably wire up the boost gauge soon

so just put on my new wires and that was the cause my car is no longer running on 4 cylinders and my high boost problem is virtually gone it's cool

and as for the differences between the years except for the cosmetisc differences there are a few perf. differences as well from 89 up you get an extra 2hp and 4ft/lbs of torque because of wastegate upgrades, but the 87-88 have a higher fuel cutoff than the other years the 89 cut off is set to around 10psi where the earliers are set at around 11 to 12 woo hoo

Other than the airdam, I don't see much of a cosmetic difference between the years.

What years would you guys recommend?

depends how much money you want to spend... if you plan to mod the car at all, you're gonna need to replace the headgasket and that can get expensive. so if you're tight for cash get a 87-88 and save the leftover cash for head gasket and mods, its also far easier to find a 5spd in those years...

i personally would go for 89+, the minor updates between the years make them look cleaner. also you're more likely to find a 89+ with lower mileage, so the head gasket may still be good for awhile. but then again, if its 5spd you're after, it can be a pain to find one in 5spd + good condition

Which brings me to another question. I know the supras have head gasket problems. Is the problem that the Supras burn out head gaskets quickly or that the stock head gasket wasn't great?

Because if the problem is that the stock HG is crappy, then it would make sense to buy a car with a few clicks so that it'd be likely that the HG had been replaced by the original owner.

theres a red 88 5spd for sale with new head gasket in town? hell, that solves KZ's problem for sure, definetaly just go test drive that.

NashMan's right, go test drive one and then try not to buy it. sooo much nicer feel than other cars and definetaly no lack of power.

everything else is just transportation.

These are the differences I know of:

86.5: Only NA (7M-GE) version available @ 200hp / 185ft-lb (9.2:1 compression)

87: Turbo (7M-GTE) introduced @ 230hp / 246ft-lb (8.4:1 compression)

88: nothing significant

89: Updated body styling (front clip, tail-lights, spoiler); new interior (wheel, temp controls); updated 7M-GTE motor (232hp / 254ft-lb)

90: Nothing significant

91: New 5-star wheels

92: Nothing significant

Options:
TEMS: Toyota Electronically Modulated Suspension (87+)
Targa top: also known as "sport roof" (86.5+)
Sun roof: factory option after 88
TTDS: Toyota Theft Deterrant System (USA only) (86.5+)

I think all of them had A/C and power-everything.... not sure tho.
