nice to hear yoru car willbe on the road soon murray.
best way to test for a BHG is a tool that can tell you if there is combustion gases in your coolant. its US$50 from Snapon, so your shop should have something similar.

heh i know it has a blown headgasket cause the chic that owned it let her boyfriend drive it, and soon later there was all sorts of crazy exhaust smoke coming out of the car. ive yet to discover if he pulled it over right away, or tried driving it when it was overheating. if it had overheated the engine, its 99% likely to be garbage.
the only sure way to tell if the engines worth trying to recover is to take the head off and look. then it could be nothing more than slapping in another composite headgasket and some ARP bolts
who knows what kind of condition that engine is in tho, by the looks of the rest of the car it was definetaly not babied, i dont imagine it was driven too hard, but i also dont think this woman changed the oil very often or did any routine matience |

2jz into your POS teg?
if yoru thinking of a 2jz into a MKIII, 1jz swap is easier and cheaper.... a front clip can be had for US$2500, with 90% of what you need....

the 2jz will sure put out some way nicer HP #'s than the 1jz though. if i had known better, i would have gone to a 2jz first thing instead of trying to mod the 7M
theres not that many people who have successfully pulled off the 1jz swap, just alot of people talking about it.
highest HP ive ever seen on a 1jz, maybe 500
highest HP on 7M, that aussie car.. 800+hp?
highest HP on 2jz.. 1200hp?
whats the benefit of having a smaller (1jz) engine with absolutely no aftermarket and no one around here would have a clue how to work on it once it was in?
im just ranting for fun

basically it was a jap engine for both japan and australia and whereever else, they were known as supra GTs and came with 2.5 liter twin turbo engines, they rev a extra thousand RPM over the 7M and come with funky electronic gauges

anything that fits on the 2jz will fit on the 1jz. turbo manifolds, pistons, gaskets, exhaust for the 7m bolt up with a 2" extension. and there are LOTS of guys that have successfully completed the swap now. and yes, 500 rwhp is one of the top guys, but keep in mind, 90% of the hp is available below 3000 rpm. all the guys running 600+ rwhp on the 2jz have powerbands about 2000 rpm wide..... id rather have 500 rwhp for 4000 rpm than 800 rwhp for 2000.....
besides, 2jz wont bolt up, you have to go single and several other things, while the 1jz can fit in with only custom PS lines and 89-92 crossmember....
if i had the money, i would go 1jz... or build a big power 7m.

I agree with you enraged about the 2000 rpm power band.
thats no fun at all.
are you saying that the 2jz swap into a mk3 supra is a pain where the 1jz is easier?
Still looking for a good place to pick up a 2jz engine.
also other stock mk4 parts. are there any wrecked ones on the island?

well the only thing hard abotu the 1 j swap is makeing the wires longer and might have to replace your cross member if yo uhave 86.5 to 88 whiht 89 to 92
the wire thing is caues the stuff sit on the other side of the eninge
to bolt up a 2j it little harder but very possible need the 89 cross member
1j ecu
eninge bay harness
1j bell houseing to blot up the r15 trans or go for the 6 speed mrk 4 one don't know the modle number for it
custom drive shaft
single turbo kit
new ic
new exhuast
after all that you go one hell of mean car about 500 or more hp
any way toby you got 2 dasy to find out if you want my head or i will have to sell tot he other guy that asked me frist off of parts trader
i am selling it for 200 to the guy whiht shipping and crap caue shis head is cracked

teh 1 j is great motor way over desighed for it's time but only made for 2 years so not much after market came out for it
plus toyota mad ethta enigne for raceing but never used it and used the 7mgte trd race vertion
then that go repalced by the 3sgte race vertion
one other resone why the 1j was not made for long was it was twic as much money to make then the 2j or the 7m
i have neat litte tec notes on the 1j
the other reson why poeple like the 1j is it spools alot faster then the 7m
any way i going to have smoke now chow
get back to me toby

the 1jz is a simple swap into the MKIII, much easier than the 2jz. 95% of mods for the 2jz will bolt up to the 1jz, so there is your aftermarket!

turbo manifolds, valvetrain, injectors, fuel computers... the 1jz is the 1st version in the JZ series, just like the 5M and 7M.
before spouting off about something like this, do the research, talk to people who have actually DONE the swap.....

but still in the end you ca't get that much power out of 1j as you can get out fo the 7m or 2j
and when you go big power you will have to go single so what is the point on getting twin when you will convert it to sinlge there not eghou room under the hood for big turbos
highest hp mark is 500 as twin
as for sinlge it around 600 or some thing
that is the bigest reson why poepe go 1j is caues it's tiwn

i wouldnt bother with a 1jz, im really not sure about the aftermarket for them.. you mean to say that the pistons (3.0 liter) from a 2JZ will work in a 2.5 Liter 1JZ? all ive read about people with that engine is they've had a bitch of a time finding aftermarket parts... however, if you CAN just slap all these parts on, it would damn sweet, the MKIV 2jz has tons of aftermarket parts, which could push a 1jz as far as funds provide
howdyheehaarr!

i wake up everyday not wanting to go to work, and since my drive to work is only about 2 minutes, the car is barely warm by the time i get there, so no boosting....
im not sure on pistons. 2jz is 86mm bore x 86mm stroke, perfectly square engine while (i think, not sure) the1jz is undersquare (shorter stroke and larger bore) which lets it rev so high, and the 7M is oversquare, (longer stroke and smaller bore) which is one reason why is almost always has larger torque than hp.
i think it all depends on what you want. a dyno queen 2JZ that puts out 900 rwhp for 1500 rpm, a 500 rwhp 1jz that has a FAT powerband and revs to 7500, or a built 7M. for the cost of a 1jz or 2jz conversion with mods to get to bigger power, you can build a 7M that will rev to 10,000 rpm, hand 600+ rwhp and still have cash left over for suspension/rims/paint/interior.
i would go 1jz just becuase of the twins, no/very little lag, and the fact that only a handful of people in north america have done it.
