Anyone had a chance to play with the Tamron 24-70 f2.8 VC yet? I'm shopping for a used canon 24-70 f2.8L I and am wondering if I should consider the Tamron as an alternative choice?

It's not bad for the price, but kinda soft between 400mm & 500mm. At least the one they have for rent at Leo's is - unusable on a D800.

Kyle (77civic1200) has one, and it seems to be a sharp copy.

No I wasn't but thanks for letting me know.

Seems like it would be a good ultra zoom for travel.

The lens that shall hence-forth be called "Bigma".

It's such a big lens, I guess it would be smaller than fixed 400 or 500mm lenses, but I don't know if it would be considered a good travel lens because of it's size.

Its a pretty heavy lens, not sure its what I would consider a good travel lens. I have taken it with me on a few trips and even on a couple hikes, but I think most people wouldn't enjoy carrying it around, its a sacrifice for sure.

I have one of the originals, not the OS version. Its a pretty slow lens to focus, which can be frustrating for fast moving subjects, but I have used it enough to know its limits and can generally work around them to get what I want. Its a f6.3 on the long end, so its not a good lens when its getting dark out, but I have been pretty happy with the the sharpness and contrast. Its a cheap way to get into a 500mm lens, it has limitations, but if you work within them, its a pretty killer deal.

Can I justify buying a 80-200mm F2.8ED/80-200mm F2.8 AF-S/70-200 F2.8 AF-S? Was shooting over the past few days with my uncles F2.8D, couldn't put the lens back in the bag LOL.

^^^ Yes.

If you're going to buy a 80-200 ED, get a good copy, because I've seen a huge variance in sharpness between individual units.

I scrapped the mirrorless idea for now (even tho the GX1 was only $395 body only on amazon.com yesterday!). I got my sigma 30mm 1.4 which is a prime with a focal length i wanted for a long time for a crop body. but the focus is quite slow. Is this normal? I still have 5 days to return it and the Canadian warranty is great ....

since mostly i shoot cars , when i go out to meets n stuff, i've been thinking of getting a new lens in the near future. currently im stuck with my 50mm 1.8 but i find that it doesn't give me a wide enough angle to get the type of shots i want. Perhaps unless i go back really far..lol so for a new recommended lens, would the one mb_ mention be my best bet ?

the tokina 11-16mm?

Panasonic Lumix 12.5mm f/12 3D G Lens for Micro Four Thirds Interchangeable Lens Cameras

$65 bucks....
I don't really have the need for 3D pic's...nor is my computer monitor 3D.
Worth the $65 bucks just to play around with? And only be able to view them on the camera screen.

So I sold my 10-22 on ebay, and bought my new camera (Panasonic FZ150)

Went to take pictures of my other lens (Tamron 28-75) and then saw this

Nothing I can do about it. It doesn't seem to affect the images, so I guess I will have to just sell it for cheap on ebay.

LUMIX G VARIO Standard zoom lens, 14-45mm / F3.5-5.6 ASPH. / MEGA O.I.S .....$349.99

The 14-42 can usually be found for around $100 bucks off Craig from people's kit lens..or around $120-130 brand new.
While the 14-45 is usually around $250.

Any benefits or really worth spending that extra $100 bucks to get the 14-45mm in the long run?
Or should I just save up for the 14-140mm. MRSP/local retailers is $999.99...but usually around $600 on Amazon.

It's definitely not USM fast but it's faster than non-USM lenses (obviously I'm talking Canon, I'm not sure of the Nikon equivalent).

Are you talking about clean AF locks, or low light? I have a bit of trouble in low-light, but not enough to get rid of the lens. With enough light I get pretty instant AF locks on my 50D.

Yeah it took a while to get used to. Kinda weak for a lens that short, but small complaints aside it's a great lens.

my 40mm is experiencing the known issue of AF not working occasionally:

AF problems with your 40mm Pancake? Please post your Serial Number. - Canon Digital Photography Forums

and:

Canon EF 40mm f/2.8 STM Product Advisory « Canon Rumors

Quote:
To Users of the EF40mm f/2.8 STM Interchangeable Lens for Canon Digital SLR Cameras
Thank you for using Canon products.

It has been confirmed that the autofocusing function of the EF40mm f/2.8 STM lens, which was released in June 2012, may not operate correctly.

The details of this phenomenon are described below.

Affected Product
EF40mm f/2.8 STM

Phenomenon|
If pressure is applied to the lens barrel while the lens is mounted to the camera (pressure can be applied even while attaching the lens cap or while carrying the camera with the lens attached in a bag), the autofocusing function of the lens may stop working.

*This phenomenon does not occur during normal shooting.

*This phenomenon does not result in a malfunction of the lens.

Workaround
When the above phenomenon occurs, detach and reattach the lens, or remove and reinsert the camera battery to restore the operations.
so, i phoned the camera shop and they never heard of such an issue. but, bring it in and they'll have a look at it.

lol, wait til i get there, they're going to give me a new lens, just to get rid of me.

k so i recently got some $$ to spend, and like i said i want a new lens. Should i still go with the tokina 11-16mm ? like i said i love shooting cars and i think it should give me a good field to work with, plus itll be good for scenery shots as well.
