Thanks, I'll check those out.

I was debating on getting a 50mm prime. My friend said that if I started off with a prime that I would learn more than with a zoomie.

Nikon Macro tube extender (manual)

Is that macro tube worth purchasing?

Assuming you have APS-C, 50mm would probably be too long. I'd go with a 30-35mm variant. Same "learning" benefits.

Razor Ramon HG 01-14-2013 03:25 AM

I have done some browsing and reading, and I think I will go with.. 18-55, 35, and a 55-200. All seem to be good budget lenses, and should suit me well as I learn!

insomniac 01-24-2013 11:52 AM

Just sold my Sigma 50mm 1.4. loved that it had more blur than my old Nikon 50mm 1.4G but i couldnt stand how soft it was :/

Looking to play with new primes. what do you guys suggest? ps not looking to get a 35mm and i like bokeh :D

Senna4ever 01-24-2013 05:13 PM

^^^ 85mm f1.4G.

If you like super bokeh then the 200mm f2 VR is for you. :D

Volvoman 01-24-2013 05:39 PM

I just picked up this guy last week.

105mm F2 DC

85mm 1.4G is too $$ for me :( K time to get a 85mm 1.8 but if im not satisfied and am okay with the range then ill go 1.4 LOL

any other suggestions that are wider? preferably under 60mm... i use a crop sensor too.. i usually shoot 50mm and my widest lens right now is 35 :/ i dont think i can make enough use out of a 85... was thinking of sigma 30mm 1.4... any other suggestions?

LiquidTurbo 01-24-2013 09:59 PM

Personally I don't think the 85 f1.4G is worth it. THe 85 f1.8G is 98% of the lens at 1/3 the cost.

Is there much difference between the 85mm 1.4D and 1.4G?

Yea, massive price $$$.

lol. In my opinion, to an casual photographer they are the same. The 85mm f1.4G is way overpriced. The f1.8G seems to be the real winner, it's price/performance ratio can't be beat.

For the regular consumer, the f1.8 is fine, but the f1.4 is totally worth it for the pro. I don't think the f1.4 is overpriced...depends how you look at it. The f1.4 has a much sturdier build quality that would stand up to the rigors of professional life..the f1.8 wouldn't last very long.

LiquidTurbo 03-23-2013 09:51 AM

^ true, most people here are casual photogs ;)

$1799 after tax is $2015. That's a serious amount of dough for a lens. Personally unless you make your living taking photos or you're hyper rich, that's kind of a lot for a prime lens.

A really nice review of the f1.4g vs f1.8g

Nikon 85mm f/1.8G Review

After looking at all the data, it becomes hard to justify the f1.4G (again for the regular consumer)

I've been pretty 'rough' with my f1.8G, just because it is lighter doesn't mean it isn't a durable lens. The 50mm f1.8G is also light as a feather, but doesn't mean it couldn't stand up to constant use..

My 0.02c.

Edit: another insightful review:

ForbiddenX 03-25-2013 10:26 AM

Difference in terms of sharper images, faster AF, creamier bokeh etc.

I'm trying to decide between whether or not I should save up the extra $$$ for the 1.4G version.

Thanks for the links LiquidTurbo I will give them a read! Maybe I will just get the 1.8G after reading through them :P.

It'll be used an a D600

Not sure if related but I ll ask.

I have a D3100 with a 18-55 and a 55-200mm lens. I was thinking of getting a 18-200mm lens and sell the other two.
Keep what I got or buy the single lens?
I am a noob but trying to learn as much as I can.

^Get your 50mm 1.8 before everything else.

Razor Ramon HG 05-01-2013 12:54 AM

On a cropped, I would recommend the 35mm 1.8.

It's technically a 50mm anyways if you crop into it, and much more versatile in my opinion as a general lens to walk around with.

Thinking of buying a nikon lens. Maybe a 1.4G prime lens. Should I buy new and get 5 year canadian warranty or buy used with no warranty?

Impreza 06-14-2013 02:10 PM

I'm a noob at camera but am looking at the Sony Nex-5r but it have two different lens package and I tried to google both lenses and they both have good and bads. Thr lens are 16-50 and 18-55 Which one would you guys/gals pick?

GodZilla 06-15-2013 07:38 AM

Friend of mine just bought a Sigma 35mm 1.4 for around $899 from Broadway Camera. I checked on Craigslist and it was selling for close to the $899, so not really saving much. For peace of mind for five years of warranty that works out to be $21 a year $1.75 a month or 6 cents a day. Not much at all in the long run.

Side note: I feel like one of those info commercials for sponsoring kids in Africa. lol

I have the nikon 55-300 and I found a 70-300 vr for a really good price. I'm shooting on a D60 but might be moving to a D90/D7000.

Is the 70-300 worth upgrading to? I mainly shoot for my sports teams (hockey/softball)

bigzz786786 07-24-2013 01:05 AM

i know its not a lens, but i just picked up a barely used brown ONA union street bag for 125!!!

Would I be able to use Panasonic 45-200mm f/4-5.6 G Vario MEGA O.I.S. Lens H-FS045200 lens on my Olympus EPM1 and get better results than using this lens Olympus M.Zuiko Digital ED 40-150mm f/4.0-5.6 R Lens

I can get them for relatively the same price, im just wondering if its worth it going for the panasonic lens over the olympus one. I like that the panasonic has more zoom and has image stabilization, but im just worried that it won't be fully compatible with my camera since my camera is an Olympus.

And how is the build quality for Panasonic lenses, i heard the Olympus ones are plastic but very very high quality built. Haven't heard much about the Panasonic build quality.

I may pick up the panasonic for $180 tomorrow so please let me know.

nabs 07-26-2013 05:35 PM

Ended up getting the Panasonic Vario lens... seems pretty awesome. Picked it up for 180 bucks. Now to test it...

AndM 08-05-2013 08:17 PM

Looking for a solid 52mm circular polarizer for a good price. Anyone have Hoya's 52mm circular polarizer? Any recommendations?

Cheers.
