Shots from 'The Matrix."
I'll be darned...it worked! I taped my Hoya R72 IR filter to the front of my new flash, went into my bedroom, turned off the lights and shot this in total darkness. ISO 3200 1/160 sec.
This was in my livingroom. Notice how the shell of the Lowepro bag is reflecting a lot of the IR...it's black in visible light. The rubberized part is black though.

because of your whitebalance, and because the clouds are sitting so low that the city lights light it up.

Sometimes some cameras (most i think) have pre-set settings for different white balances (i.e. sunny days, tungsten light, cloudy days). Or you can set your own in the "custom white balance"...

Custom WB still wouldn't do it, because you'd need something white or neutral grey to get the balance from. Since that angle is obviously from over around Stanley Park, you just wouldn't get the same lighting there as in the scene (or much lighting at all, for that matter), so a grey card would be pretty much useless.
Only way to really "fix" that would be in post-processing... WB with a color picker, select something that's actually a neutral grey or white...
But really, I don't think the colors are that far off... the sky is a bit of an odd shade, but there's a wide variety of other colors in there as well.

wow that new convention centre is coming along nicely... looking good!
as far as WB goes... if you can manually set the kelvin temperature or fine-tune your WB settings, set it so that it's not so warm. Or you can just shoot RAW and fix the WB later in Photoshop.

1st image post for me. No adjustments other than the uneven border, because I don't know what i'm doing. Any suggestions? I would like to be able to see more of the water at the bottom but maintain the gloomy look.

On cloudy days, the sky is naturally orange near the city because light gets bounced off the clouds. Not really anything you can do about that other than darken the picture. You can set the white balance to the clouds, to make the sky gray, but there's nothing unnatural with the colors right now. If you want a black sky, take it on clear night.

i like #3. Simple, effective and very modern.
The first doesn't do anything, but rather seems to undermine your talent. It doesn't seem thought out.
The 2nd is great, but again, looks to me like a snapshot rather than a photograph. |

1st one: Composition is too busy.
2nd one: Better with less distraction, but the angle is not so interesting. When you are photographing, think about what it is you want to tell the viewer. In this case I would just say it's a snap shot of somebody's backyard flower. If you wanted to show something about the flower like it's color or the way it blooms you should think harder about how to present that to the viewer.
