cute girl. use a longer focal length.

1st one is the best imo due to the colors/emotion.

thanks, #2 is personally my favorite also, love catching those "moments"

Longer focal length... check. I had the 50mm 1.8 and 70-300 but for the sake of laziness, strapped on the 18-55 most of the time

I acutally just picked up a 50mm 1.8 yesterday and I love it!!

Here a quick shot I snapped today, any idea why the pedals at the top are sort of halo'ed? Was that from me shaking the camera? or is that just bokeh?

NICE! whenever i get that kinda halo I've always assumed it to be slight camera shake but I could be wrong. That's the first thing i did when i got my 50mm too, took a picture of a flower haha

crazy, it is such a young term!!!
but the way that wiki describes it, it doesnt seem to explain as to why there is a halo around colin's petals. It only seems to suggest that the "fuzzy" background is for aesthetic reasons, to bring focus to your subject.

So.. based on wiki's description, I don't agree with Senna :P

The edges are 'fuzzy'. In Japanese terms, it falls under 'bokeh.'

yeah i guess so, I still don't really see as a halo being fuzzy though. Halo is caused by light from behind, where as fuzzy is caused by depth of field.

but i'm not trying to argue, i think bokeh is a form of art so it is up to the artist to decide lol

ah well yeah i don't know either. I thought you were saying the reason for it was because of bokeh.

I wonder if it's just a fluke with the way the light hits the backs of the petals.

p.s i love how a single flower can cause this much discussion

I am even more impressed everytime I come on this board and see the things people are producing!

GFunk: you are unbelievable with a camera! Keep shooting, because I want to see you published somewhere! You have a natural way of capturing things, which as a photographer means you're either extremely lucky, or you just have 'that' much skill!

The only thing I would think about changing is with the apple shot, I would ditch the sticker. I think the idea was to make it pop out, but the focus is what's popping those apples for me, not the sticker. It gets in the way. Apart from that, I want to eat all the apples, so you've done your job of making them look pleasing!

I would absolutely LOVE a high-res version of any of those shots for some new wallpaper! Gimme gimme pleeeease! e3333@hotmail.com

ckrieg & others: I don't think I've ever been drawn to a flower photo so much! The curled pedals are wonderful, and the bokeh halo helps it, when it SHOULD hurt it! I am going to go with bokeh as reasoning, as the focal distance and aperture would indicate his DOF wouldn't be too wide, which to me says that focus ends interestingly enough at the end of the flower, causing the defined edge of the pedals to go 'fuzzy'. The lighting is causing the lit part of the halo, you can tell this because the color at the edge of the north part of the flower is brighter than that of the southern side.

But hey... it's only a flower!

No bad...pretty good, actually, but be careful of the perspective distortion.

Er, what is perspective distortion and how do I avoid it? I used a Sigma 10-20mm and I`m told this lens has barrel distortion at 10-12mm.

See how the lines of the buildings are converging? That's perspective distortion. You need an expensive PC lens or you need to correct it in Photshop using 'Transform'.
