I love shooting at the Giants games now, because they've HUGELY improved the lighting - whiter, more efficient lights on BOTH sides of the rink, instead of the yellowish ones that used to be only on one side, with a big block in the center turned off to prevent washing out the jumbotron.

I'm guessing he took that picture on a Sunday...otherwise there would be cars parked alongside there.

...oh, duh.
Hahah...not freaked. Lots of people on REVscene know my name. I just don't like to be rude and forget folks I've met...even though I've pretty much met everyone on RS.

Last time I went to the Canucks game, they didn't let me (although open practice + skills they let it slide).

Been taking my camera to Giants games for the last three years, including playoff games and even the World Juniors tourney... only once was there ever an issue: at a Giants regular season game, "Host" dude came down to our row and leaned over to tell me I'd have to put my camera away because it was "too big". He couldn't actually define what was "too big" about it - whether it was the lens, or what - and had no answer for why I was even allowed to bring it in if it was "too big". Just insisted that I had to put it away.
Of course, this was halfway through the third period, and I'd walked past him twice at the top of the stairs carrying it, without a word from him. Stupid rent-a-cop.
It's only the EF 75-300 lens, but the body (300D) looks "beefier" than it is because of the battery grip.
Canucks are a lot fussier about it, but one security twit actually told me once that I could use it, and the only limitation was that I couldn't have a lens over 90mm, and if I was seen using it, the camera would be confiscated until after the game... I wondered how my 75-300 would fare if I didn't turn the barrel past the 90mm point, but decided not to actually test the premise...

| Quote: Originally posted by ckrieg my first portrait shoot and my first portrait shoot with flashes. Shot for a friends engagement, any C&C is MUCH appreciated! | Hi Colin,
I quoted the image just to keep it fresh so that the critique doesn't go missing. Now I'll be the devil's advocate about it, but only because I think you want it straight out. If you don't like the critique, let me know and I'll soften it for next time.
Overall: Good image. It has good lines in it and the expression is fairly natural. I like the overall tones of the image.
Composition: The composition is fairly strong with a diagonal line that crosses through the image and helps frame the couple. I think this image works with having the couple in the middle.
Pose: The pose is simple and effective. Do remember that taking photographs of individuals you still want them to look their best. There are few simple things you could have done to improve this in your image. First, the female subject should not have leaned back as it exposes too much of her nostrils and makes her look slightly awkward. Second, the clasping of the bottom set of hands makes the hands a clump of fingers. Yes when you look at it you can discern 2 hands, but in a quick glance it looks like a conglomerate. Flatten out their hands and put them on top of one another without clasping. Also I would have asked the girl to relax her shoulders a little it because it is hiked up and gives a feeling of tension.
Editing: If you going to go through the image and give it a good edit I would suggest that you whiten the teeth. Because the image looks processed, I would expect the teeth to be whiter for the guy.
Otherwise, good job and keep it up!

wow! Thank you very much for the detailed critique! That's exactly what I was looking for! I will keep this things in mind for next time. I was mostly focusing on trying to the get lighting right with the flashes, and not so much on the subjects. Quite a few of the shots ended up having bad composition, just because I was so concerned with the flashes and ended up paying little attention to the composition.
Thanks again, your comments throughout have been a great help! |
