Ps. Do you have photos of the set up? I'd love to see how you had it all worked out. Especially the lighting. | No, I totally forgot to take the set-up photo. I had one light lighting the background through a screen with circles cut out to get the mottled effect. This light was also flagged to split the light to illuminate the left side of the set. Another light was coming in from behind to backlight the bottle and glass, and one more light was lighting from the front, camera right. I also had to use numerous gobos, flags and reflectors to shape the light to illuminate shadow areas and cut light in other areas. I didn't realize my white backdrop was too small until it was too late. It doesn't matter, as I got an 'A' anyways...I think the instructor missed it.
PS....I have an opportunity to buy a Nikon D3 with the new 24-70mm f2.8....should I jump ship? Tempting.........

Nice stock photo Jason. Small flaw, but it is a great still life.

The flash is mounted behind me on a tripod that sits 20 degrees above them set for 1.5 stops higher than the exposure in the sky.
I clipped the highlight of the couple by about 1/3 of a stop so the only adjustment I did in light room was take down the exposure by 1/3 stop. I bumped the contrast and saturation by 10 (my usual import settings as I shoot with completely neutral settings in camera)
Other than that, that's what it looked like in my camera.

I never understood the advantage of an ND filter...does it just darken everything so you dont need to use as fast of a shutter speed and can use a wider aperature?

Sometimes you'll run into situations where you want a lower depth of field or to get your shutter speed to a manageable speed to sync with a flash. To do so you can use an ND filter to drop the amount of light and hence lower your shutter speed.
Problems sometime arise when your flash doesn't have enough power output to light up your subjects... So there are cautions. Practice and knowing your equipment's limitations will help you produce consistent images without much problem.

I'm a good news photographer but I'm light years behind someone like you when it comes to portraits/art photography...the low camera/high flash angles worked really well for that pic...keep posting your stuff, man it's much appreciated! |

the clouds are amazing there, lots of depth/definition. no radar traps there so on the 80km limit hwy everyone is doing 120 or the ballers in the rovers would go even faster. one night we gave a cop a ride into town and i thought it was hilarious when we were doing 50 over the limit and he's just chillin in the back seat talking with us.
Many copper mines in Zambia, I visited a bunch and each time you leave the property they search your vehicle to make sure you aren't sneaking copper out. corruption is still around, instead of getting a ticket for talking on your cellphone while driving you can just slip the cop a little bit of money and be on your way. Being white had its advantages and disadvantages, majority of people were very friendly.
When I got out of the rural areas (about 5 days out there) and back to where there were tourists like Livingstone (where victoria falls is) I could not believe how hot white chicks are haha only saw a couple but it was like Damn! haha when I got into downtown London it was like culture shock!
stories and more pics to come...
