Thanks. That was with my Sony a700 + Zeiss 16-80 f3.5 with the Dynamic Range Optimizer on +3. I tried the same shot with the Nikon D700 + 24-70 f2.8 combo and the camera just doesn't have the dynamic range to match the a700. It couldn't pull as much detail out of the shadows.

shooting at 2.2-2.8
1.8 blurred the background too much and sorta ruins the shot
need a bit of detail

ugh..if i wasnt so noob, i woulda learned how to properly use Apreture Priority mode..
it prob would give me better shots

I was actually going to ask if it was a dri or hdr photo as the range is pretty unreal! Now what is a dynamic range optimizer? Is that a feature built into the camera?

you weren't in aperture priority mode?! Then what did you shoot in? M? P? Av mode is very easy to use. You set the aperture, exposure and iso that you want, and the camera determines the correct shutter speed to match that requested exposure

i now know how stupid i was yes
kinda funny now that i've had the camera for ..a year or so, and im finally getting serious. Having some friends that will explore and snap photos with you definatly helps. Time to make daddy proud..haha since dad has been a photographer for 20years now..

And sunset the same day:

I know, I know... lens flare. I kinda liked it in this one, tho.

Sony DSLR's have a feature called DRO (Dynamic Range Optimizer) that pulls detail out of shadow areas. If it's put on its highest setting, the images can begin to approach HDR but not quite. I try not to use anything higher than the +3 setting (+5 is the highest), as the shadows can become noisy. If you expose for the highlights, DRO can do wonders for the shadow areas though. Sony DSLR's with DRO switched on have the widest dynamic rannge of any DSLR out there now. The D700 I used for a comparison couldn't come close, but I didn't do a proper test. I'll try doing a proper test soon.

Here's a shot with DRO set to +3. Notice the detail in the shadow areas. My friends who took the same shot with a canon 40D & Nikon D200 had just black in the shadow areas, especially the shadows of the poles falling across the tracks. It was a very sunny day.

So the Lensbaby rep came a few weeks ago and brought the new Lensbaby products. She brought a prototype 20mm wide angle Lensbaby which was really cool along with this monstrosity...a contraption to reduce the image circle of Lensbabies to use on camcorders. Eep!

....and the cutest dog you'll see in a while. A customer's 3 month old Burmese. Everyone in dropped what they were doing to come play with the puppy. Images were taken at 1600ISO on the Panasonic LX2 and cropped, so they are very soft.
