Sorry, I wanted to keep it short but there's so much I wanted to say about this.

You're not gonna believe this, but what a coincidence.
I took a photo walk by myself today, walked around Hastings & Main, Chinatown, and then hopped on the skytrain at Stadium.

Got off at Granville and do you know who I saw? Baby! I couldn't believe it.

I went up to him, asked if he wanted anything to eat. He kept saying "sub..sub..sub.." so I asked what he wanted from Subway. He wanted soup. I got him a roast beef sub and chicken noodle soup. Didn't know if he liked spicy stuff so I put that stuff on the side.

So I came back and gave him the food, and said I recognized him. He asked me how, so I asked if he remembers someone taking a picture of him a couple weeks ago. He said he did. I told him that I saw the picture, that's why I came over to talk to him.

Asked him if he minded me taking a couple pictures, he said it was fine. So I took a couple with my film slr. After that I put my bag down and talked to him for about five minutes.

In that five minutes, he told me a little about himself.
Said his name was Baby Lidd.

"Just like my hat" he said.

I don't know if he was messing with me, but he said it quite proudly.

He said he was from Greenland, came here about 10 years ago. Said he had a whole wackload of jobs before. One was on a boat as a guide, he talked to tourists about whales and stuff. Then he started to mumble a bit so I couldn't really understand.

Another one that surprised me even more was that he used to take pictures for a living. When he saw my film slr, his eyes lit up. He kept going on about how the city is beautiful, and I even let him hold my camera. He held it up this eye and he said something about how the light strikes the buildings and the reflections, it gave the city a life of its own.

Five minutes sitting down and talking with him, and I couldn't take my eyes away from him. Lots of people walked by, and I caught a couple stares from some. It must have looked weird.

Anyways, I told him I had to go, and that maybe I'd see him around. Took my 30D out and took a couple more before I shook his hand and said bye.

Here's the picture. You did all that reading, you deserve an award.

Both. I try my best to manual focus what I want, and if that doesn't work then I let the camera do the rest.

the pics of Baby Lidd are very touching. It shows a lot of emotion, it gets the viewers to stop and think of the hardships these guys go through to get by day after day

The photographs are excellent, very well composed and processed as well

Just wondering how do you take pictures of this? I'm still pretty new, but the only way I can think of doing it is by decreasing the shutter speed to.. ~10 seconds.. but every time I try in well lit areas, the photos turn out white. What else is there that I have to do?

What you're missing, see, is the proper aperture to match your desired shutter speed. For situations where you know what shutter you want, try shooting in "Tv" (shutter priority) mode - that allows you to set the shutter you want, and the camera will set the aperture accordingly for its metered exposure.

From there, you may need to play with the exposure compensation, depending on the lighting, but that will get you started.

I think you might have misunderstood what 77civic1200 was saying. You can set your AF point manually on your camera. If it's a Canon, it should be a red dot that shows up when you're just about to take your picture. You can either set it to auto, and the camera automatically does it, or you can force it to use a specific point. (since I'm a noob, I pick centre as my focus point)

I think in your second picture, the camera decided to focus on the leaf in an obscure spot, hence it was hard to see where it focused on for the picture. (and most of it looked blurry except for a small spot in the centre) Set it to centre so you know where it's going to focus on every time so it makes the AF a little more predictable. Then pick which part you want focused by pressing the shutter halfway to lock and then compose your shot and take the picture. That way, you should have the place you want in focus every time.
