May i ask, why 200iso? | 200 ISO is the base ISO of the D700. Why do you ask?
I actually wanted the B+W 13 and 20 stop ND filters, but Schott has discontinued making the glass.

Ah i see.
I just figured that i'd use the lowest ISO possible, especially when using a long shutter. Just thought that 200 was rather "high". Unless you were wanting to get a bit of noise in there to sharpen things up a little bit.
Didn't know that the base iso on the D700 was 200.

Didn't know that the base iso on the D700 was 200. | Actually, the base ISO of most of the DSLR's currently on the market have base ISO of 200. This is the ISO with the least noise, and most dynamic range, so shooting at ISO 100 on a D700 will result in more noise and less dynamic range than 200 ISO. Of course, the difference is hardly noticeable, but it's there. This is because the sensor is in effect being over-exposed, and the image is being adjusted by the camera via software.
The canon 5D mkII's base ISO is 100, FYI, so shooting at 50 ISO would result in an image with more noise and less dynamic range. Againn, the difference between 100 ISO and 50 ISO isn't very noticeable, but it's there. That's why it's called 'expanded' ISO.

any critiques on my storm the wall pics? Editing or composition?
I was trying to capture the struggle of going over the wall either in the facial expressions or body positions of the participants. If they suck shit, lemme know! You won't hurt my feelings.

Senna:
The shadow on the first one is kinda distracting, maybe standing too close to the wall?
I really like her "pose" on the second one. My only gripe is the strip of white wall on the side. Even though the red dress sticks out like a sore thumb, that white section of wall is still noticeable.
The third one is my favorite. Everything is laid out so well and the contrast is great. It's like:
BOX . . . . . . . . . . Oh snap!

went to portugal for 7 days... i've only had my SLR for 3 months, but i would really appreciate some feedback.
i like this one, but it doesn't seem to be in focus that well - boat was moving so i couldn't retake it.
tryin a panorama... i wish i got the full length of the pool, but i tried again the next day, and it didn't turn out as well as this one.
tryin an heavily processed hdr - the images didn't line up properly - it was really windy, and my tripod wasn't great... |

You won't hurt my feelings. | I think the problem for me, is there is no connection with the people. You took the photos from a ways away, when you really needed to be up close showing just how much of a struggle it is. Looking at your pics, I think.. pfft I could do that... whats the big deal. Now if you had some wide shots, from low down, making that wall look ominous and imposing, I would be like hell no I'm not trying that Take a look at K-dub's pillow fight shots, see how he got right into the action? makes you almost feel like you are there.
(great shots btw K-dub)

(great shots btw K-dub) | Just like 77civic said, there's no connection. You're shooting from afar, and mostly at their backs. Some is okay, but most of the stuff was just back shots. If you were right up beside the wall like this girl here http://www.flickr.com/photos/davidhtam/3423457908/in/set-72157616182800319/ you could have got some nice and gritty captures. Always feels better to be right in the midst of things then far away, shooting with your sniper gun.
Not to say they were all bad, the ones where you had the full body reaching up for the hand [i think the pictures of the guys in speedos] does show the struggle very well, with their muscles all flexed.
Perhaps if you were situated the other way around, not facing the wall but just in line with the wall or even behind it, capturing them as they finally made it over, that would have been cool.
I like this one though http://www.flickr.com/photos/davidht...7616182800319/
Nice portrait. Why is she ironwoman? http://www.flickr.com/photos/davidhtam/3407798892/in/set-72157616182800319/
Did that help?
ps thanks 77civic. Quote:

This is an example of what I was trying to explain in the street photography thread. You have to take risks, and get close if you want the shot. I took those with a D700 + 24-70mm f2.8 standing in the middle of the room.

I went up to SFU to shoot some pics for the first time. Unfortunately I left my quick release plate at home =( so I had to use my backpack as a beanbag or shoot off a railing or the ground all night. |
