First time touching the Canon XS in a long time, using the stock 18mm-55mm lens.

I'm a total noob at this stuff

These will seem familiar to the veterans of this forum. I originally took similar photos in similar foggy conditions 4 years ago with a 6MP DSLR. I finally got the chance to re-take them with my 5DmkII + 24-70mm f2.8L. I also took photos with my 4x5, which should be REALLY high resolution!

^ Let me be straight up, I HATE the first photo. The tiltings so bad I actually have to tilit my head to read the image - I should not be turning that far!
The other problem is your composition, you cut off a subject you're trying to represent!

Second image is better, the tilt is OK. What bothers me is that the kids hand in the back is getting cut off by light and the frame. I also tend to focus more on him because the light is stronger there.

PS: Your making me tilt extreme right, then back to the left .. sigh

Thanks for you comments

I totally agree with everything you had to say. I really wish i had more time to set this up. The kids were not very cooperative so i litterally had like.. 2 frames to work with. After the second frame, they were off running around and climbing the walls.

Maybe i'll try the same thing again with some older subjects. The first shot was just a test shot to help me position the lights.

(sorry about making you tilt your head.. haha)

First time playing with my 450D...got it on boxing day with stock 15-55mm IS lens.

Tripod used, with 2 second timer.
Exposure time: 20seconds
ISO: 100
Aperture: F20

I was wondering if the ISO was too low or anything that I can do to improve it.....any suggestions?
In my opinion it doesn't seem as vivid as it could be.

update: I tried to adjust the tone curve assist to high....and the picture is brighter but it becomes grainy...why does this effect happen?

Thanks

You usually want the iso to be as low as possible so you don't get much noise in your photos. Although that's really starting to change with the latest dslrs that came out, especially D3s and 1D MKIV. The photo is a little dark for my liking.

The photo is very underexposed. You need to open up the aperture more, to get more detail. Try using f8 or f11 with a 20 second exposure.

The photo gets grainy because you're trying to get detail where none exists. It's always better to get the shot right in camera than try to fix it later in software.
