I was pretty jazzed on how it turned out so I decided to post it before I'm fully done with it (since at the pace I work at it'll be months) :p
The red is a fairly faithful representation of the actual colour of the tree, which is what motivated me to shoot it initially although I lost some of the lighter shades with the method I used for the layer mask which makes it look kind of funky as well, so I'm going to try and get more of that included as well. I'm undecided on if I should leave the background full grayscale as it is right now or if I should just include colour but dial it right back?

when'd you go? i really want to go back.. it's so perfect there. and seriously it's hard to find a better sunset since the whole side of the island (well the busy side) faces west LOL

but the damn commute to get there sucks so much haha

There's no way that is a faithful representation of the colour of the leaves. There's no tonality to them. You need to calibrate your monitor or profile your camera - probably both.

looking through my pictures from this year I came across this from April and thought it was pretty neat

Got it today after a trip to Blaine- All I could say was W O W!:D

Caveat: I've never used an L lens, but after playing around with my copy, all I can say is that I pray to God that there's more L in my future :drool:drool

Nice. Yeah the new 70-200 is quite amazing.

ColinK 11-07-2010 07:52 AM

^ Glad to hear you guys like it so much. That'll be the next zoom lens I pick up. The price tag is a little intimidating though (for me anyways) haha

m3thods 11-07-2010 09:21 AM

I picked mine up in the states. with the dollar so high and the canon rebates, i couldn't resist. mine came up to just under 2400 after everything (got about 96 cents from the cc company)

and if you can find an excuse to upgrade your body to the eos video slrs (60D+) then you get double the lens rebate ;)

did u keep the original box/receipt or mail it to yourself or did you declare it at customs?

i'm kind of a fanatic in keeping boxes/receipts .... just curious

First time there this end of July, and it was beautiful. Stayed in Station 2 area, was literally 3 minutes from Jammer's and my guesthouse was a 2 minute walk from the beach as well.

For the four of us, we stayed @ Taj's Guesthouse in the deluxe room, and it was only 2000 php / night (off season) and it was so ridiculously cheap. I miss the food (though all the restaurants I went to said they had no lechon kawali..something about a shortage of pigs!), the people, the massages on the beach, skimboarding, the water, the girls, COCOMANGAS.. yea it was fun.

Getting there was a lot more tricky than I expected, and when the porters started taking our bags we freaked out a bit, where are they taking us?!

Beautiful place to vacation.

went to Kerrisdale Camera in West Van today, and walked down to the beach afterwards(only two-three blocks)

Nope I declared it. I figured I can't really hide boxes, and I like keeping everything just in case (God forbid) i have to sell it. Plus in the worst case I paid, instead of the worst case if I tried to smuggle it :S . Taxes were only 240-ish, and there's no duties on lenses.

haha yeah my family stayed at Station 2 (le Soleil).. best location IMO. My gf and I walked the majority of the island- not that long at all :P

Yeah the porters multiplied since my party had about 15 people. It was tough to keep track, and we ended up arguing with them also. Definitely going to pack light next time I go there.

Considering the cost of everything there, it's near the top of my vacation wish lists. It's just getting to the damn Philippines that's so expensive :(

Used some 10 year old Ilford HP5 400ISO B&W and scanned them using a very shitty printer...

Oh well. The prints looked decent, but the negative scans were not so great.

Anyway, here are a couple shots of Lydia Paek and one of Victor Kim.

^ some real beauties Tom!

Family portrait I did for my roommates family.

It's probably not an edit that they will use for their print, but I liked it :)

Strobist: Vivitar 285hv from camera right for rim (was a little too hot in hindsight)

(I've updated the post now)
Thats an interesting point though, it definately looks different on my parents computer/monitor

N.V.M. 11-08-2010 04:18 PM

guys, is $580 a decent price for a "UW" EF 70-200 f/4 L zoom? feeling so restricted here with just a 17-40.

"UW" means made in 2008, so it's not that old....I think it's a fair price.

my girlfriend's mini-lop. Not sure why they call them "mini" as she's as big a rabbit that I've seen in person :p

I'd say assuming nothing's wrong with it, yeah that's a great deal. UW = 2008, so not too old. Maybe you can even haggle down to 550 or something
