Old Nikon, Pentax m42 and K-mount (beware of the pin though), Minolta, and even Canon FD are all great alternatives to modern lenses. Like Canon L's are amazingly sharp, great control on CA and flare and such but older lenses have unique looks and characteristics. The lens above, for example, flares like crazy in sunlight...it's almost unusual for photography in direct sunlight but it looks fucking amazing for video.
And of course they're manual focus only so if you're not used to manual focus...and most people aren't...it'll be hard to use these in everyday situations. Look up "hyperfocal distance". That helps but I use these manual lenses primarily for video as well as when I have the camera on a tripod and time isn't of the essence.
If you want to get into it, the Helios 44-2 58mm f2.0 is a great gateway drug. Fast, sharp and has amazing bokeh characteristics. Add a $10 adapter, shipping and you'd still get change from a $50. There's a few on CL right now for $25. I like this lens so much I bought two....although I bought the second only because it has a 0-serial number, meaning it was first batch and some were reserved for the Communist Party (oh, they're USSR made).

For example, I have M42 -> Canon EF, M42 -> MFT, M42 -> Nikon, Pentax K -> Canon EF, etc.
You have a Canon? Get a M42 to Canon EF and it opens up a MASSIVE number of possible lenses.

First things first...let's learn about the rule of thirds. Once you get that part of composition, you'll find that your pictures have a greater sense of balance. Then go on to learn other parts about composition like leading lines and golden rules and whatever.
Then once you've got all that down, forget it all and shoot.
Not trying to put you down but no one ever got better just from people telling them their stuff is great. We don't give enough critique in here.

The x100s is way better than the x100 but the af isn't as fast as they claim. I will say the IQ is top notch.
Heres a x100s shot |

I'm learning and I was just messing around however I would love to learn how to shoot properly. Unfortunately I have no idea what that means. Can you please re explain everything in lamens terms

Divide a picture into thirds so that it looks like a wide tic-tac-toe board when you're done. Place subjects on those lines.
Look at some of the pictures above. For example, pay attention to where Senna places the horizon in the twilight photos. Look at where the subjects are. They're never centered (either vertically or horizontally)...they're placed on one side on a third. I can't explain why but it's just more aesthetically pleasing.
Of course, there are always reasons to break these rules but I find that when you're starting, knowing at least this will improve your photography.
