It's just too bad that they're like $500 each

Well the Canon 420EZ flash, which is what I have, will slave to a 580EX, and Kerrisdale Cameras lists one used for about $140. IIRC, the smaller 220EX will slave to it as well. If you want just a transmitter, look for the "Speedlite Transmitter ST-E2".

so I can use any flash and set it up wirelessly then, or how does this work? I need a transmitter off the camera to tell the flashes when to go off..is anything compatible with anything?

Canon uses an infrared remote system, only works with their own Speedlite flashes and transmitters. The 550ex/580ex flashes have transmitters, and the ST-E2 is a dedicated transmitter.

Not sure if any other makers' flashes have support for this system...

I'm always amazed by how much you guys know about photography in general, but especially what equipment works well with what (ex. flashes, lense etc...).

Love the birch tree shot, but it's a little flat, IMHO. I'd do a little more tonal separation...or shoot it with Tri-X + red filter, and print on high contrast fibre paper. Hehe...

The tones do look a little washed out Salar. Compositions are nice.

For the first one, as a personal preference only, I think the B+W is a little warm for the subject photographed. I think it may have more impact with a slightly cooler tone. What do you think?

I love the tone of the first one. Seems to have a slight "glow" around the shack. I've seen that sight numerous times driving back from Whistler, but this picture still looks fresh. Very nice.
