So...has anyone ever seen rollerderby and perhaps even shot it?

I've been asked to shoot it at the Kerrisdale Cyclone Taylor Arena on April 11th....

You'd most definitely need a fast camera that is good at high ISO and a fast tele lens.

Gonna ask if I can set up a flash. If not, I think I can do fine.
30D, 11-16, 28-75, maybe borrow Jordans 70-200. all 2.8. :)

An 85 f1.2 & the new 24mmm f1.4 would be great lenses to use too, if you can get them.

^ i think the shots would be better if you saw the take off and landing points.( i haven't done it my self , but was told that by my practicum photographer that shoots for red bull)

Generally I would totally agree with that, the only reason I have strayed away from that, is that my buddy isn't a pro rider, and the jumps we build/find aren't nearly as big as the ones from redbull or in any magazine. The first shot was more of a test, I hadn't tried any thin DOF shots with boarding and wanted to see how the 85 1.8 tracked.
The second shot was more about framing him in the middle of the power lines, that ridge is the take off point, and the landing was pretty much where I was standing haha, I had to dive to the side as I wasn't expecting him to take it with so much speed the first time.

So..rollerderby gone and passed.
The arena was soooo dark! I was also quite restricted as to where I could set up a flash/position myself...sigh.

The important thing wasn't for me to shoot rollerderby, but rather VDL's dodgeball games during the intermissions. Did try to shoot some of it though.
Their photographer had two big alienbee strobes aimed towards the ceiling [it was like.. reflective foil]. His stuff is here, so much better, he just overpowered the crappy lighting.

First intermission. Static placing of the flash did not do me much good as it would get blocked from time to time [people reffing/retrieving balls]. That and I couldn't figure out a good angle since the "court" was large and people were not always close by.

Intermission over, back to the rollerderby.
Shot with my wide instead, wanted to do switch it up.

Cool shots. Where are these rollerderbys held usually?

Thanks.

Local games are usually held at Kerrisdale Arena, but they play at different places too.
Check out their site if you're interested. :)
