Sorry, meant hold value, not investment. Ideally, it holds a reasonable value to upgrade 10 years down the line. I'd be dailying the watch and desk bombing it. Which is why I lean towards used, I liked stuff already scuffed so I don't feel bad.

I currently have a SKX007 that I've been dailying for close to 4 years now. I got it for like $270 new and somehow they're $425 - 700 now?

sonick 05-31-2022 09:21 AM

Yah my recommendations still stand in terms of holding value within your $3k to $7k price range.

I got myself a used Speedy Pro literally the week before COVID lockdowns for mid $3k and I'm sure it's held/increased its value by now.

Gerbs 05-31-2022 10:25 AM

Where did you get it used?

Seems like the best deals are on Chrono24 but I assume you pay like 20% duties on arrival? In addition, the one's that are $5K CAD and below are no box or heavily used.

I wish I picked one up for $3.5k during the covid drop. Any advice on how to test authenticity? Craigslist seems to have 2022 brand new for $7.5 - 8K

Local craigslist. Lucked out and was able to talk the guy down as pre-covid there wasn't as much cash/inflation/disposable income.

I met the guy downtown and we went to Otto Friedl to get it authenticated. Took about 15 mins and $50 or something, the guy just opened the caseback, looked at the movement, made sure serial #s matched. However if I was spending $10k+ then I think Time & Gold has an authentication service that is more pricey and takes a few weeks.

The Speedy Pro is quite hard to fake if you know what to look for (e.g. omega logo inscription on crystal, spacing and balance of the dials and markers, etc.)

Badhobz 05-31-2022 12:24 PM

Speedy pro all the way. I bought mine before the 321/3861 caliber price increases

If you can find the 1861 caliber speedy, get that. its probably the best bargain. I got mine in 2019 for 5k Canadian flat at the YVR omega duty free. Used right now i think they are still around 5-6k USD...

Id call around and see if they have a 1861 new, hidden in the back somewhere. Grab that at a reasonable price (5-6k) and enjoy it for a lifetime.

Gerbs 05-31-2022 12:37 PM

Will start looking on Craigslist and authenticate for $60bucks. Just called them to confirm.

I was debating if I should look at the 1980's pieces too since it looks vintage.

Thoughts on these two?

Are the differences the sapphire crystal backing? I assume the sapphire is sold above MSRP if used is same price as MSRP?

Badhobz 05-31-2022 03:25 PM

Those ones are all automatic co axial movements. Aka a modern omega movement. If you want the OG experience, then you gotta get the manual hand winding one. Aka 1861 calbre or 321

The winding action really adds a nice extra “interaction” with the watch. Also the winding clicks are extremely satisfying.

Plus the heritage of the watch really shines through the heslite crystal and manual winding.

Basically if you want hand winding and a thinner dome with less distortion, get the 1861 with no sapphire sandwich. All sapphire crystal speedys were co axial automatics (I believe)

I was actually looking at a Speedmaster 38 as backup in case I never get offered an Explorer this year… I like the smaller size much better on my wrist and I don’t even mind that it’s sort of a modernized derivation of the Speedmaster but the coaxial movement makes the case ridiculously thick - it’s like 15mm. Basically ruined the watch.

The Omega AD was pretty desperate to sell me something though lol… they keep texting me saying they can get me a good discount, which is like the opposite of the Rolex experience.

Try Lugaro Jewelers in West Van for an Explorer. Friend of mine just bought one last week. :)

Unfortunately haven’t been back to Vancouver since pre-covid now!

bcrdukes 06-01-2022 08:27 AM

Oh, are you in GTA? If so, time for a GTA RS Meet.

Likewise for me. Trying to plan a trip back to Vancovuer in July.

Badhobz 06-01-2022 09:06 AM

the messed up thing about watch collecting is that i almost never wear anything other than my apple watch. You just cant beat the functionality. i only pop on a nice watch during weekends

Yeah, moved to Toronto for work a few years back.

I just can't deal with having to charge a watch every day and basically have it become obsolete / too slow to do anything after 2-ish years.

Casio pumping out the CasiOak variants.

This one however, I think is the exact right amount of gaudy for a watch that isn't really supposed to be gaudy from a manufacturer that makes the pinnacle of gaudy watches lol

I'm in danger.

And to think I won't be tempted by another G-Shock for awhile, just got this one last month.

Haha I know eh, there's something about that one...lol.

The steel (?) one looks nice, is the entire case metal/steel? Not too heavy?

My black CasiOak is my go-to atm as well lol

sonick 06-02-2022 09:48 PM

I've had the white on white casioak in my recently viewed pages on my browser for months. When it goes on sale below $90 I'm pulling the trigger.

Willl offset my black/black casioak well.

Was worried about the weight as well since I hate wearing anything remotely heavy, but its very very tolerable. My daily is a dw5610 and I wont hesitate to grab the GM-2100 if I'm feeling a little "fancier".

You mean this one thats on sale for close to 90? https://www.thebay.com/product/casio...14_color=WHITE :toot:

I'm really eyeing the GA-B2100 series coming out anytime now. Adds Bluetooth, Atomic Time and most importantly Tough Solar!

Lol exactly that one except I'm too cheap and have too many watches so I need an additional discount before I convince myself to pull the trigger.

I was intrigued by the new one with Bluetooth and all the tech, but I just can't get over sacrificing the date dial.

If you buy two (or anything above $175 total purchases) you can save $25 with code SMSM which makes each of them $84.99 before taxes.

I might be biased because I own a few but vintage Rolex oyster date/datejust. Can be had for around 3-7k in various variations. You can enjoy it for many yrs and sell it off for pretty much what you've paid. Don't need to worry about wearing it daily it as they're easy to have work done if anything gets damaged

Badhobz 06-06-2022 06:06 AM

Im in hamburg and this really is the land of watches. Rolex GMT master can be bought with no previous purchase history, for the price listed. Quite a few submariners and datejusts too. No daytona though, well at least he said not this week.

Mr.Money 06-06-2022 04:44 PM
