i like the one on the right. too bad that's the $3000 one!

68style 03-06-2023 10:49 PM

Hey rb do you do watch repairs? I have a G-Shock I changed the battery on and no matter how much I try I can’t seem to line everything up properly so that the light button works.

Could I perhaps hire your much less ham fisted hands?

rb 03-07-2023 02:49 PM

What model of Gshock do you have?

I never charge ppl nor do I consider myself a pro at repairs by any means, think private modder but for watches lol. I dont mind taking a look at it but i’m out in Port Moody and I'm limited to the small and quick repairs at the moment b/c most of my stuff is in storage

It should be an easy fix. I could go into a write up but I think its best with this yt vid. Starts at 8:06

You might have to take the movement out to make sure the rear of the pushers are flush to the inner case. Sometimes things can be caught up because they are extended due to the design of the model. Just need to push them in. All pushers should look like this inside of the case,
https://i.imgur.com/TbAk5nl.jpg

IF/When the movement is seated flush into the case, take a micro/precision flathead screwdriver and depress the metal movement button contacts to slowly position and align the buttons of the case pushers with the button contacts on the movement like in that yt vid

68style 03-07-2023 03:26 PM

Yah it's a super rare older one from Japan... one of the Dolphin research ones... it's got the big G button that you push under the screen to activate the light.

I watched the video on how to do that particular watch too and they mentioned issues with the light not working after but fuck me if I can get it right argh!!

I'll try and give it another go though, but maybe if I can't get it to work I'll have to buy you a beer in PM one day lol

rb 03-07-2023 04:55 PM

Imo, the only downside to G-shocks is that its common to have backlight issues, esp after a battery change. I'd take the movement out and try gently pressing down on the backlight contacts on the movement to rule out that its not a backlight issue.

What's the module (4 digit) number on the caseback? If the module is common, getting a pre-owned but fully working movement might be easy to find even if the case is rare.

Fuck you swatch. This is utter garbage

rb 03-07-2023 06:30 PM

I'll stick to the traditional steel irony quartz chronographs if i'm going to buy another swatch. Too many issues with the case and pusher buttons falling off, etc. Seen a 2022 moonswatch in person and it reminds of something that came with a Happy Meal in the 90s

SkinnyPupp 03-07-2023 06:42 PM

I was actually looking at the Moonswatch, because I kind of want to have a cheap chronograph to use at home, and I like the idea of an homage to the Speedmaster, and even a watch I can share with my wife.. Well forget it, because the chronograph design is NOT a copy of the Speedy (which is a 30 minute easy to read dial). Not in function, but not in form either:

https://i.imgur.com/nDRZHdT.png

The minute counter is a 1 hour dial with markings at FIVE MINUTE INCREMENTS. So if you are timing something under 5 minutes, you have about 3mm of space to try to judge where the hand is pointing.

In other words, the chronograph is just a decoration. You push the button and watch it move, and then stop it, but you can't actually time anything over 1 minute.

I know it's just a gimmick homage watch, but anything put on a watch should have some use, especially if it's an homage to one of the most famous tool watches of all. FailFish

Not sure if other Swatch chronos are like this, but if so, they are just decorations too.

Mikoyan 03-08-2023 11:25 AM

I have the Jupiter, and even without the minute markings I find it easy enough to tell the difference at 1-4 minutes past each 5 min marker.

That said my eyes are ok now. A few years from now if my eyes start going, that might be an issue. But I can see how tat can be an issue for some people.

SkinnyPupp 03-08-2023 02:21 PM

Even taking out my personal tastes for having the most legibility possible, it's an awful design for a tool watch, which should be as legible as possible, as quickly visible as possible, without having to guess what is showing.. If it's a decorative watch, fine. But this is an homage of one of the most famous tool watches ever, so yeah..

SkinnyPupp 03-08-2023 03:20 PM

More new Seiko drops... GMT Prospex models

https://i.redd.it/qv2t3t0xrhma1.jpg

These are expected to be around $1800 - $2000 for the blue one. 24 hour markings are tiny (didn't even see them at first!), and interestingly they use a standard dive bezel rather than a 24 hour bezel. "Caller GMT" btw

Special Edition Cpt. Willard, around $3000

https://timeandtidewatches.com/wp-co...ura_sla069.jpg

Uses the 8L35 which is based on a Grand Seiko movement. I really like the blue crown

Definitely a design choice they made. Some of Swatch's other chronos do and don't have the extra hashes. For timing stuff I usually use my blacked out g shock gbx100ns.

Great looking releases.
A gmt driver was always on my want list. But I've got the Seiko 5 skx001gmt and The Longines chronomaster gmt already. And a few divers as well.

Edit: Dammit. The green SPB381 is under serious consideration now. Going to be about $2k here list.

Badhobz 03-09-2023 02:40 PM

2k ?! Yikes. I rather save up a little more and buy Swiss or German.

SkinnyPupp 03-10-2023 04:17 PM

Green!

Picked up a Seiko Auto Chrono because its been awhile since i've found anything at garage sales, etc. Chrono function barely works and I knew these movements have some issues but wasn't expecting the parts to be more than double the value of the watch. Pretty cool history behind the movement though as it shares the same one in the "bruce lee" and the "pogue"

There's always someone who finds great stuff at garage sales, be it watches, video games, whatever valuable things.. But whenever I looked it was just garbage. And of course they don't have them here

Good job man. Probably will work great after a service

SkinnyPupp 03-10-2023 08:51 PM

In case you guys are like me and your watch obsession is extending to clocks, Marathon currently has a 50% off sale on clocks. Of course these won't be the same quality as their watches, but there's some nice designs and good deals.

I grabbed the desktop clock to replace my old Philips digital LED that is WAY too bright. This one has a dim amber light that turns on at night, or you hit the snooze button to fully light it up.

Thinking about getting a wall clock too. They even have a manually wound alarm clock for $10!

rb 03-11-2023 08:43 AM

I have the Marathon Jumbo 12. I love it, esp because it doesn't tick and the seconds sweep like an automatic watch. Paid $5 for it from a thrift store lol

Badhobz 03-11-2023 10:53 AM

I think I’ll get one of those for my office work desk. Looks pretty sweet. Hopefully the cleaners at work don’t get any ideas or sticky fingers.

Is it just on select items or do the advertised price already include the discount?

Doesn't seem like many that show they're on sale

Yeah turns out it's "up to" 50%. I didn't realize when I made the post, because I was only looking at some desktop clocks at the time, and they were all 50%. Some are 25% and some aren't on sale at all :okay:

SkinnyPupp 03-11-2023 04:07 PM

Another wall clock I like is the Braun BC17.. $50 though (it does have a glass lens)

Or if you don't mind dropping $200-300 on a wall clock, get a Max Bill from Junghans

Getting this watch cured me of all my watch addiction

Found REPLACE20 gives you 10% off as well. Paired with me being able to get free in-store pickup saves on shipping. $24.41 all in for the clock you posted. Needed another clock for my desk since I moved my Twemco clock to the living room.

Shipping fees are insane though, unless you spend over $200 WutFace
