Can you guys recommend me a cheap 'dress' watch to wear for a black tie event? I'm looking at Seiko 5s and swapping the bracelet to a black leather band.

This is the one I have in mind:

Seiko Men's SNK355 Automatic Stainless Steel Watch

Also, I'd like to learn how to change my own wrist strap. Is this easy and where can I buy the tools? I'm assuming you would need tools of some sort?

TIA

My small collection so far. I was hoping to add a Breitling or Omega to the collection next if I manage to save enough.

You need something like this to change straps.

If you plan to change it often, consider buying a higher quality one (Bergeon).
I got mine in a tool kit and it's a cheap one. It kinda broke already after changing straps about 10 or 20 times.

Recently bought this and I love it. Sorry the pic is big so I put it in a spoiler lol.
I have tried on many watches and didn't quite like the bracelet. I ended up getting a men's watch because they have much more styles that I prefer.

Spoiler!

Seiko Kinetics are nice - just wish it was a little quieter when it winds as you move.

I usually take my watch to some random chinese watch place and have them do it for like $5.

But if you plan on swapping around quite a bit then I guess it'd make sense to buy one.

I've got the same watch in the same color. Great watch but when it comes time for the battery change... yikes. $60 from an authorized tissot dealer which includes pressure testing, checking of the seals, etc.

Oh really?
I didn't know about that.
How long does the battery last you though?
Have you tried to change the battery yourself?
I have the tools to do it so maybe I'll try to DIY when it needs new battery.

A battery lasts me close to 4 years with this watch. The first owner of my watch spent the $60 but since I dont swim with it, I just got it changed at Delaney's for $20. Works fine but I guess its worth it if you will swim with it, etc.

Haha thanks! Its nice to have something that belonged to a parent knowing that they treasured it. This was my dad's first ever rolex and he used it A LOT so it looks worn and vintage especially since the crystal is acrylic and not sapphire.

Thanks for the info.
4 Years is a long time. Not sure how long the previous owner had the watch.
I'll give it a try to do it myself once the battery is dead.

+1
Having anything passed down that your parents used to treasure is a feeling of its own.

Money can't buy sentiment.
Honestly I wouldn't care if my dad passed down a Fossil to me. I'd rock it hard.

I remember my first watch was from my mom when I was 4 or 5. It was a Mickey Mouse watch. Gold hardware and brown leather straps. I was in love with that thing. Wore it every day and showed it off like a boss. Growing up, it got lost somewhere in time. (No pun intended.)
Just the other day I was digging through some old boxes in my garage looking for an old book. And to my surprise, I found something else. That same damn Mickey Mouse watch. I was stunned. All these memories came rushing back, and I sat down and bawled like a fucking baby.

It's amazing how something as simple as a watch can carry so much meaning and emotion. I'll post a picture of the watch when I get a chance.

Amazon.ca?
http://www.amazon.ca/Seiko-SNK809-Automatic-Black-Strap/dp/B002SSUQFG/ref=pd_sxp_f_pt

I would rather buy it from Amazon.com though. You can have it shipped to any of the package receiving store in Blaine or Point Roberts and pick it up.
You can get 3 of it at the same price it's selling on Amazon.ca.

Thanks Joquio, I may order through Amazon or even Chronograph.com. has anyone ordered from chronograph.com before? I ran a quick google search and found members on watchuseek.com vouching for them.

Are you looking to have it shipped to your door?
If so try hit up eBay. Just make sure the seller is using postal service from the said country.
For example if it's shipped from USA make sure it's shipped by USPS.
Avoid UPS or FEDEX at all cost if you want to have it shipped to Canada.

Here is one for example, even comes with SS bracelet instead of those crappy canvas strap

SEIKO FIVE 5 Mechanical Automatic Watch SNK809K1 Military Style | eBay

Comes to $83.99 shipped to your door.
