Anyways, I was thinking of going to the bay and looking at the selection but came across this thread. Are there certain brands I should look for, avoid? Certain places i should look at? Across the border? Websites? Just to keep in mind, my budget is probably around 500 max. Any suggestions fellas?

Do you want automatic or quartz watches?

If you are looking for automatic watches then I think moky's suggestion is very good.
Hamilton has lots of nice automatic watches at ~$500.
You can start looking here as PJ suggested: Hamilton Khaki Field Watches

If you want quartz watches then I think Tissot has more to choose from.
A popular one that's smart and sporty looking is the PRC200 Chronograph on leather band: Tissot PRC200 Mens Watch T17.1.526.52

I personally wouldn't buy watches at the Bay but you could go in and try on a few to get a feel of how big of a watch you are comfortable wearing.

entry level $500 automatic that would fit in well with your above criteria of business meetings, semi-formal and formal gatherings:
Tissot Visodate - basic black, automatic, 42mm which is a pretty good size that wouldn't look oversized in a suit, thick enough to have wrist presence, thin enough to slip under a shirt cuff
Tissot Heritage Visodate Mens Watch T019.430.16.051.01

You are right. I missed the part about formal meeting/setting.

i think TimeCo carries tissot, and maybe some other local watch/jewelry stores (ann-louis in richmond centre has a pretty big collection). you might want to check it out first there to see if the watch fits you and "works" with you

I almost picked up the Tissot Visodate too. It's a fantastic watch for the value.
Instead, I bought a Movado Museum with an alligator strap that was on a clearance for less than the price of the Visodate.

I wouldn't have regretted picking up that Tissot though, that's for sure!

felt this is the best place ..
so I have a Kenneth Cole watch that just ran out of battery

where should I go to get the battery replaced for less than 20 bucks? (the back isn't easy to open - not the kind with screws.)

one of those stalls within the bay/sears they're skilled and charge like $10 to replace batteries sometimes they'll do it for free (sears @ coq centre)

Check on Costco's website. There are some great deals on there once in awhile but they sell out quick though. I regret not pulling the trigger on a Gucci automatic for $589 that normally goes for $1100 in the stores and on Amazon.ca

Hey guys, I'm in a market for a watch right now as well. I am looking at something similar to what van_city23 was looking for, a stylish and professional watch that can be worn for different occasions. My range is from 800-1000 and I have no idea where to look at, I went to the bay but didn't really find anything good there. Currently I have a seiko that has a similar style to the Tissot Heritage but silver band. Anything you guys can recommend? Thanks!

^^same suggestions as above: tissot, hamilton, "maybe" lower end tag heuers if the design fits you (i know people have a love hate relationship with TH).

check out the hamilton jazzmaster viewmatic line, thinline, or petite/slim-petite line. i know those would fall in your category, are between 40-44mm in size.

tissot - still the visodate would be the best bang for the buck.

Thinking of picking up a Tag Heuer Formula One Indy 500. Anyone own this watch? Thoughts, comments, alternative suggestions?

I got it at the store near Superstore at Metrotown. Don't buy at Omega store, since the mark-up on watches is pretty high

I almost bought it when I bought my Formula 1, if you are a fan on Indy 500, it's cool but my gf thought it was kinda tacky that it had INDY 500 on the side.
