Watch winders. Yay or Nay?

Not asking about the $$$$ ones like Wolf or Eilux.

Wondering about the ones that go for $200.
I found a few for around $200 thats got multi-directional rotation plus adjustable TPD. Just wondering if theyre any good in that price range..
Are cheaper ones more noisy and prone to breaking down?

Want to get one since i dont wear my auto daily.
I'll be setting the TPD to the lowest setting since i just want it to be able to hold a bit of juice to keep it functioning until i wear it next time.

Share your opinions and perhaps the winders you own :)

I'm selling my Bell & Ross BR01-92 Heritage if anyone is interested; it's basically brand new only worn a few times.

Rant! Pls give opinions!

As some of you know, I bought/received my Hamilton Jazzmaster auto not too long ago. Less than a month of owning. (the pics i posted are at the top of this page). Infact, I've literally worn it out of my house 4 times since its not my daily watch.
I bought the watch from Chrono Botique which is affiliated with their "higher-end" Rodeo Jeweller company in Oakridge Mall.
Long story short, the watch came with a leather strap. I bought a Hamilton rubber strap online to a more comfy summer strap.
When I received the rubber strap, I took the watch in to Rodeo Jeweller to get the straps swapped. Guess what? Their f*cking watchmaker scratched 3 of the 4 lug corners AND put a fairly deep scratch on the back casing! On my BRANDnEW watch!
The watch maker provided extremely poor customer service skills, and needless to say, extremely poor workmanship!
Unfortunately I didn't carefully inspect the watch when I picked it up after. When I got home, I buffed it up and inspected it before noticing all the scratches.
I immediately called them and spoke with a salesman stating what had happened. He told me to go in tomorrow(Saturday) and speak with the manager for them to polish it for me.

Now, my question is, should I even consider the polish for them to make up for their mistake? And how likely would it be for them to replace the watch?
I'm just SUPER pissed right now!
To me, this was a fairly expensive watch purchase and knowing that THEY scratched it just pisses me the f*ck off!

The watchmaker even showed me his chipped screw driver that he used attempting the get my spring bar off! I mean, how much f*cking force does one have to use when working on a watch?!!?

I'm thinking of going in their tmrw demanding for a replacement. If not ill file a complaint to Hamilton aswell as the Better Business Beauru.

Have anyone else experienced this? Do I have a case?

I'm just so utterly pissed. Had to save up for the watch. It spent way more time in a watch box than my wrist. And this dumb fuck repair man fucks it up. I literally wanted to cry after seeing all those scratches.

I will never return to give my business to them nor refer anyone to them for business!!!!!!!!!

E_Fahlman 05-03-2013 11:57 AM

I do all my own work for this exact reason; I practiced on some old crappy Guess and Fossil watches before even attempting to do any of my Tag Heuer's. Got a watch maker's kit off eBay for about 60$. Has everything I need except the templates for opening up Breitling's. Sorry to here about the unpleasentness but I think you're out to lunch if you think they're going to replace your watch. A Polish could very well take the scratches out; unless they're really bad. Post some pics of the damage.

Is polishing a watch damaging for it?
I was thinking in terms of cut polishing a car which takes off some of the cars clearcoat... not so sure about what it'll do on watches tho. Would it be more prone to future scratches after polishing a watch, by taking off whatever coating of the metal, assuming if there is infact a voat od something?

I'm just hoping that they can take out the scratch on the case backing since that one is the longest and likely the deepest.

I'm just saddened thinking of the damage. Mind you, I've got 5 watches I rotate btwn and none of them has a scratch exceeding 1mm on the metal casing and none of them have an markings on the glass itslf! Tyats why I'm so pissed. Especially if I'm paying to get this service done by a "professional". Geez!
