And a radar detector, and a good mix of tunes. (There are some sections with REALLY crappy radio stations.)

A while back my friend and I had to fill up at a small town at the Washington State/Oregon border. This Mexican kid out of nowhere came up to me and asked me if I knew how to speak English. He was with his mom and dad and I believe his parents told him to ask me that question as they were looking at me in a weird way .

Enterprise has those $180 weekly rental deal.

I wouldn't drive my own car to Cali. Pop + fries + burgers = really
bad fart and burp. You will need to throw your seats away after
the trip

Just did it in January... Me and my g/f's dad drop my g/f's car to San Francisco for my g/f...

Left Richmond at 6:30PM, in San Francisco at 11AM

Gave G/F the car, rested and ate, caught a flight and was at home at about 10PM... was in school the day after with gifts for my friends from the airport, they were like WTF

The way we did it was we would drive until we had 1/2 tank gas left, then start looking for a gas station, filled up, pee, drank red bull, stretched, switched driver, repeat.

I agree with asian_XL, enterprise has some weekly rates that aren't bad and if you have an entertainment coupon you can save more ($20% off or more). I used enterprise to rent when i went down to cali the past two years.

It was really fun, the scenery was awesome on the pacific coast, disneyland was fun, and we went to legoland too. you will definately have fun

I remember riding down to San Francisco in the middle of July ~1990 or so in the back of the parents non-AC'd '85 Volvo. Driving thru Sacramento the temperature was well over 100 and the car broke down.

We went to the theatre to watch The Rocketeer

If you don't want to sleep in your car...I suggest you find hotels around 8-9pm at the latest. Also try to find hotels that are not too close to the city. They are cheaper.

I did this road trip before, and here is what briefly i did.

1st day, stopped at eugene oregon, slept for a night.
2nd day, went to moterey bay aquarium along the coastline then reached Beaveraton (sp?) in SF to visit my cousin. Stayed there for two nights. Went to the piers, the prison, cable car...

Went to haight st, sutter st to shop if you like street and funky stuff.

After SF, reached Sheraton near LAX. Stayed in LA for 5 days i think, went six flags, universal, disneyland for two days, la brea ave to shop, old pasadena, santa barbara, long beach...

On the way back, stayed at portland for a day. Nothing much there, just go to the downtown i guess. And maybe Nike.

Then Seattle for a little bit before headin' back here~

It was so much fun, but spent crazy lot. Didn't get any tax crossing the border tho since we stayed at the States for two weeks and you have certain amount allowed.

Anyhow, road trip costs more than flying tho. But you can't get to all those cities by plane. Or you can fly to LA and rent a car and drive back.

If you've got the time to do it, a road trip with friends and/or family (that you can stand) is worth it.

After graduation, I drove all the way down to San Diego with my wife (then gf), her sister, and her sister's bf. Major stops included Sacramento, San Fran, LA/Anaheim, and Las Vegas. We were gone for 3 weeks and spent less than $1000 per person.

I just did this last week tho I went considerably farther.... all the way to Las Vegas in one shot.. went with a buddy taking turns driving. I took the first 12 hours, buddy drove for 6 and I took us into the city. Needed to get away before starting my new job this week.

Just an update to this ancient thread, the best road trip accessory I've found is satellite radio. Having 150 stations at your fingertips is great when you are doing 20+ hour drives.

These coastal highways in Oregon and California you guys are talking about - are they fun because of the scenery, or are they actually sea2sky (before olympics) style twisties you wouldn't fully enjoy with a crappy rental car?
