Also would it be really bad if I only play up to my hybrid or 5 wood? I barely practice my driver and 3 wood and they're pretty damn unreliable (lots of slices and mishits). I can get my 5i (longest iron I have) about 150-160 carry on a good hit, and my 4h and 5w bit more than that. I made a big change to my swing during lessons on Saturday and I don't hit my hybrid or 5w as reliably but my iron distance and striking has improved...
I would personally put a hybrid in your set over the Wood,
I've played only one season and I found it almost impossible to get a perfect 3 Wood hit, however my Rescue would always be more accurate

Yup I got a 4h that I will be bringing (as well as putting in extra practice at the range this week). I'm planning a 4h or 5w with a follow up 5i to get me within 150 of the greens for the 500 yd par 5's.

I'm just worried cuz the first hole is a par 5... don't wanna look like a fool on the get-go

Don't worry about the first hole being a par 5. Even for low handicappers, its often played as a 3 shot on green hole. The large tree on the right detours most from going at the green on two. Heck, I've often hit a 5 iron on the tee box and often manage a birdie or par at least.

For the second hole, even though its a par 4, play it as a par 5. A bogey is a good score on it:

Start your round with positive swing thoughts and enjoy the course.

It's best to tee off with 4 some or a pair if they are people you know and you tee off at a good time where there is nobody behind you.
I lost many balls , miss-hits , bad shots
I use to stroke 6-8 on Par 3, 4 , 5 etc.
Just be confident with your game, but if you do take too long just pick up your ball and simply head to the next hole.
You want to keep your pace of game up

Thanks for the advice guys! I'm really hoping to score under triple digits but I'll be content as long as it's under 110. Have spent the whole winter working on my irons and barely any time spent on chipping and putting so hopefully it won't be too bad

110 isn't bad at all if you're a beginner.
The best I got was 107 off Blue

Question for those of you that have golfed a while...

How long did it take until you were able to hit consistently and and not having to worry about blocks, slices/hooks and complete mis-hits? I'm not talking about PGA level and landing every shot exactly where you were aiming but rather not having to worry that the next shot will go into the woods or roll 20 yds.

Adding on to that, how long did it take after that point until you were able to start working the ball?

Thanks!

$600 off forged irons if anyone is in the market. If these were regular flex instead of stiff I'd have bought them already myself. VR_S Covert 2.0 Forged 4-PW, AW Iron Set with Steel Shafts @ Golf Town Online

So I ended up playing at Mayfair Lakes instead of UGC since my buddy's friend wanted to join and UGC was full. Total was 113 (60 front 9, 53 back 9).

Bads:
-During warmup, I was hitting alright but for some reason I could not hit an iron to save my life.... not exaggerating but 90%+ of my full swing shots from SW -> 6iron were flubs... slices, hooks, thin shots fat shots, you name it, I hit it. Couldn't hit a full swing iron shot to save my life. The only full swing iron shots that went straight or a slight fade was my 5 iron. I don't know if it's because I'm too used to hitting it off the mat and couldn't adjust to the grass lies in the fairway and rough or if I just plain sucked today.
-Bunkers were also my biggest weakness... spent 7 or 8 strokes to get it out of the 2 worst bunkers. I also lost 4 balls in the water, and another 3 balls in the rough/trees.
-Chipping definitely needs work, anything between 5-30 yards I was pretty bad at. Lost a lot of strokes when the ball was in a fluffy lie or 1/4 submerged in mud.

Goods:
-putting wasn't too bad... averaged 2 putts per hole (4 triples, 4 one-putts, and the rest were 2)
-my hybrid was pretty solid. Even for par 4's and 5's, I just teed off my hybrid because I wasn't too confident in my woods and drivers. 70% of my hybrids went straight or slight fade... and got pretty good distance (170-180yds total distance)
-the one time I hit my PW clean (teed up for a short par 3), I got pretty good distance. About 120-125yds carry. Always thought my full swing PW was around 110.. maybe it was the slight teed up ball position? Or the driving range distances aren't to be trusted.

Talked to my instructor (who works at Mayfair) after the game and we will be doing an on-course lesson and playing 9 holes this coming Friday.

Weather should be good this upcoming long weekend... gonna try to play a round at Langara. Anyone got suggestions for other easy full length courses?

played fraserview thursday, lots of wet areas but putting greens were decent. (thank god for winter rules i've had a few balls just land and sink halfway in)
and please guys remember to fix your divots(if you don;t know how watch a youtube video),
bunch poor repairs being done and tufts of grass being left around kinda makes it shittier for the rest of us.
anyways have fun out there!

Golftown has additional 15% off most of their sale products. Also, if you spend over $150, use the code MAR16BEC to get $25 off.

I ended up grabbing a set of those covert forged. Reviews were pretty good online and it was only $399 + tax

Talking about wedges, just bought 2 used Nike Engage wedges. Square sole in 54 and Dual sole in the 58. Maybe I should've went with the Toe Sweep for the 58... oh well, can't wait to get em !

RE: Masters.... poor Jordan. I was just about to head out after watching him birdie the last 4 in the front 9 thinking he would cruise his way to victory.

Haha.. I was curious about that but don't think I'd order it. I like my Vokey.

Did you order one?

Yep. I have Vokeys too, it seems that's everybody's answer when I tell them I bought an XE1.

It is by far the best wedge I've used 15/ 20 yards from the green. Even 5 yards off, to a short sided pin. Amazing. And from out of the green side bunkers, boom!

It is absolutely chunk proof, and being 65°, it just plops the ball straight up and drop like a bean bag.

Woh the XE1 looks pretty chunk proof with that leading edge! Reminds me of those chippers..

I've always wanted to try the Spin Doctor Wedge with its removable insert. See how much spin you can put on the ball.

I've toyed around in getting max spin with one of my old wedges. Its a Vokey 60" spin milled wedge which I've grinded the sole down and re-grooved the grooves to slice up balls. Paired with this head was a DG Spinner Shaft.

It's a fun wedge to play around with cause it provides tremendous back-spin. However the ball bites and checks on the green too hard, and is a bit sketchy to put in play when you can't rely on the ball releasing toward the hole.

the XE1 is nothing like a chipper. its a normal looking wedge at address and its a legal club. it takes some practice to get your brain to let yourself swing pretty hard with it because the ball goes straight up and you're only working with a 10-30 yard range. also, you must keep it dead square, not open it at all like a normal wedge because thats how you maximize the design of the wide sole. (i got a few pointers from Arron Oberholser on Twitter).
