Since I took the photos I figure I should fill in some details that I learned.
Location: Sea Island Way on ramp to Highway 99 North
Time: 3:30 – 4:00 pm Wednesday, May 30, 2007
Shortly after purchasing a brand new 2007 Subaru WRX Sti, the young driver of the vehicle left the Richmond Subaru dealership with his new purchase, about 10 minutes later and with a few kilometers on the odometer, he lost control of the high powered vehicle, hit a lamp post and spun into a ditch. The skid marks begin by the driver's door of the tow truck in the photo a few posts above. Luckily for the driver, the airbags deployed and he did not seem seriously hurt, I think his pride was totally destroyed though.
How did I learn of these details? When I arrived on the scene and began photographing, a couple of gentlemen from Richmond Subaru (wearing their ID badges informed me on this). Some of the fire fighters there also made remarks about the demise of the new car.
It was interesting to watch him trying to explain what happened to the police and to the family members who stopped by. I assume they were with him during the purchase of the vehicle and drove him there. I think the Mercedes C class pulled over beside the accident was theirs.

My question is is ICBC going to cover him?
Technically, it is still an accident, but it is 100% the driver's fault as it was a single car accident, on a clear sunny day, on a dry road. He had to do something really really stupid to crash the car. I hope ICBC will not cover this idiot.

Figures...Some highschool kid gets bought a new STI and crashes it. Why won't people learn. I really hope the parents don't just go out and let the kid get another STI/sportscar. He should have to drive a geo or get a Upass until he can learn to act responsibly with a high powered car.

Now, I think this could be what have happened.
1. overspeed turn in
2. tire provide no grip, understeer
3. try to compensate understeer with more steering input
4. realize still going too fast and heading toward the concrete barriers
5. panic and hit brake
6. chassis balance shift, rear tires loose traction
7. oversteer and point to the ditch side
8. dive toward the pole
9. impact with the pole, car swing a 180 by the force of impact
10. slide backward into the ditch and stop
Again, this is what I think could have happened with my experience in autoX. Nothing to do with the real situation.

Whenever I get anything new, I'm careful with it - whether it's $50 or $50k.

Apparently the guy was cut off by another car and had to swerve to avoid, ending up in the ditch. Once again, I used the word "apparently".
Regardless, I have very little compassion for victims of accidents like this. Who knows if the guy was speeding, in a blind spot, while drunk. It's like those assholes who say "I've been in 5 accident, and none were my fault". Sure buddy, ICBC may say it's not your fault, but 9 times out of 10, you put your own stupid ass in that position.
RIP to a carbon copy of my car.
At least a WRX or 2.5RS owner can now have the opportunity to drop a complete STi driveline in their car. |

HB20, any comments to support that thought?
If not...then let me tell you.
They can't compare. Price tags are not in the same range, horsepower not in the same range, drive train...once again, not the same, one is a luxurious sports coupe, the other is a sports sedan.
There is nothing you can compare between the two, they're just two different class cars. But I'd like to see you drive an M3 in the snow during winter, as opposed to driving an STI.

holy shit, what a waste. but that's richmond for you, i'm surprised it doesn't happen more often.
the car might even have less than 40km on it, i think the car probably gets to the dealership (on the big truck) with maybe 6km on it? then the PDI road test is probably at least 5km long, so it left the dealership with maybe 10-15km on it. and if he crashed it within 10 minutes of leaving the dealership....... what a waste!

I duno, buy one? Or are they only available to university students? Let me rephrase my point. Maybe the kid should have to take transit until he develops the maturity to not total a car within 40km of new.

haha, those Upass are transferable. Cause when you stick it in the bus machine, overtime, your pic on the pass wears off. then it becomes transferable.
Not that the bus drive ever checks anyway.
