Why should rain stop you from going out? Some of the best shots, or at least shots that no one else has can be had in the rain because no one else is out shooting - they're all too scared to take out their gear.

After 3 hours at Reifel, no protection:

I have this frustration for people who baby their gear and it ends up sitting at home. Reminds me of that one guy who asked if it was okay to bring his SLR hiking, because he was concerned about 'humidity'.

Man.

oh lol.

You needn't worry about any SLR (sealed or not) for hiking. Cameras are tools to be used. I've roughened my equipment quite a bit, and for the picture's its worth it.

People take cameras into SE Asian countries where the humidity is much higher and there aren't any problems!

I have no problem taking out the 7D or 1DmkIV + a weather sealed lens out in the rain for a little while at least. I would not take out the 5DmkII though, nor the Hasselblad. A $50,000 non-weather sealed body + rain would be bad...

Very high humidity is bad for DSLR's. I've had clients whose SLR's (mostly 5DmkII's) have died on assignment in the Amazon. They will always have plastic bags with desiccant to keep the circuits dry and a mechanical film camera as a back-up.

Lol... I've seen it twice already this year with two different clients. One dropped his Hassy off a cliff and the other's died while mountain climbing in the Andes.

Why 5Dm2? Or is it just what those guys like to bring in the field?

The 5DmkII isn't sealed very well, and not particularly durable. It can't handle what the pros sometimes put them through - a 1DsmkIII or 1DmkIV would be a better choice, but as the 5DmkII is cheaper some people choose to take it. A lot of people end up regretting that decision later when the camera stops working and they have a deadline to meet.

It's not really just the humidity... I want to re-do the west coast trail - where it will probably be raining 90% of the time - and bring my camera along for pics.... but it's a tough enough trail as it is - I wouldn't want my camera dying after being in the rain for like an hour. I one weather sealed lens - but my normal zoom and UWA isn't sealed.

But I know there will definitely be times where I will wish I had my SLR with me if I don't bring it.

^ I did the WCT a couple months ago. Brought my D7000 + 17-55mm f2.8.

When it rained, I put it in a plastic bag and shoved it in my pack. No problem.

heh

Does a 40D have as good weather-sealing as a D7000?

^ Don't use it when it's not raining and it should be fine? Even though the D7000 is partially weather sealed, I didn't bother with it in the rain. When it's rainy I'm not even in the mood to take photos.

I used 40D with F4L during the olympics when it was raining on the mountain.. Seemed ok.. I kept it in my bag and only took it out for a few minutes at a time. Although I probably wouldn't try again.

I have to agree that the 5D2 just doesn't feel as solid as my 7D was in terms of ruggedness and sealing.

My 7D survived down pour in Mexico without any hick ups. I don't think the 5D2 will fare as well in similar conditions

My lowly T1i and I go hiking and backcountry skiing and snow hiking together. Never had a problem with it yet.

The 7D would be a great camera, but I have neither the funds nor the desire to spend that much on a camera quite yet.
