Anyone got any recommendations for cheap remote/transmitters? (Don't wanna pay for pocketwizards right now)

Ronin 01-06-2013 08:17 PM

That YongNuo or whatever company makes cheapies that everyone seems to use. $25-80 for a pair depending on what functionality you need.

LiquidTurbo 01-06-2013 09:57 PM

Just looked into it, Yongnuo's aren't that good for Nikon, don't support full iTTL, but its goodfor Canon. Damn.

Film Resolution: The Pixel Count of Film

A 5DmkIII can produce a larger more detailed print that a 35mm film neg/slide can, assuming focus & exposure are optimal.

Even a 12MP DSLR can produce a sharper image if done properly, I'm sure. I have a 5 foot wide print from a 12MP Nikon D2X that is pin sharp.

I'm curious about the developing prices. Do they include prints? Because I see prints listed separately but they're all larger than the usual 4x6.

No, developing is just that: developing film. Prints are extra.

The Lab is a professional lab, they're not really set up for consumers. Their prices are higher than Costco or London Drugs, but quality is much higher. I personally wouldn't get proof prints done there, but final prints, yes.

Also try ABC Photo.

Can't you just phone them?

Gitzo GT3541L Series 3 Mountaineer 6X Carbon Fiber Tripod Legs and Wimberley WH-200 Gimbal Tripod Head II with Quick Release Base for my wildlife photography? 300mm 2.8 on the way once the vehicle is sold so I'll need a sturdy tripod for the new setup.

Can someone recommend a place in the lower mainland to just walk around taking pictures this time of year?

Both I and gf have Saturday off, and we'd like to just chill with our cameras. Landscape, cityscape, portraits, doesn't really matter.

Considering it may rain, and will most likely be overcast, where is a decent location to have fun as well as get some decent photographs?

Don't really want to drive too far though. Vancouver and it's vicinity please :)

TIA!

Gastown? Yaletown? Downtown? Vancouver aquarium? Stanley Park? False Creek?

Boostslut 01-08-2013 12:57 PM

Reifel Bird Sanctuary? Feed some ducks, take some pics, enjoy the scenery!

inv4zn 01-08-2013 01:11 PM

Hmm maybe we'll hit gastown haha. We've been to the other places relatively recently :P

As for the bird sanctuary...she's not the biggest fan of birds lol

Series 3 should be fine for a small lens like a 300mm f2.8VR.

Not sure what "far" means to you, but Steveston is quite nice, as is Finn Slough at the south end of No.4 Rd.

Posted this in the cinematography thread because I'm using this as a video edit drive but I'm guessing photographers could use a super fast external HD too.

If you're like me and you only have 256GB of HD space on your laptop, need some more HD space to edit video and traditional platter HDs are sloooooow... (30MB/s over USB3.0).

Get a SSD, plug it into a external enclosure and boom...

http://distilleryimage10.s3.amazonaw...0a1fb843_7.jpg

373MB/s read, 423 write. 20GB copied off in 48 seconds, copied to in 1:52.

inv4zn 01-08-2013 07:57 PM

Haha I <3 SSD's

Yeah, may go down to Steveston...but it's much nicer in the summer!

http://sphotos-d.ak.fbcdn.net/hphoto...29450553_o.jpg

I googled images of Finn Slough...and it looks like somewhere to go to get murdered :ahwow:.

Is it actually nicer or more interesting once you're there?

gars 01-08-2013 09:58 PM

haha, one of the earlier photowalks that a bunch of us did was at Finn Slough. It's pretty interesting - it definitely not that shady. It just depends on what you like taking pictures of. There are old buildings, boats, etc - which makes for really cool pictures. But if you like the cityscapes, etc - stick with false creek / downtown.

Up until a few years ago, I had no idea Finn Slough existed. It's weird...like swampy, Cajun country looking...but super interesting at the same time.

It's in Richmond...the shadiest thing we have around here are C-lai welding mask visors. :troll:

Matsuda 01-09-2013 12:16 AM

here's a shot I took from our photowalk to Finn Slough a few years ago

http://farm3.staticflickr.com/2703/4...428e5c57_b.jpg

its an interesting place to shoot

Prints seem quite expensive there.

What's the cheapest place to get prints done from already developed film? So I have something to check out and then if I really like something, I can get it printed at a professional place.

Hondaracer 01-09-2013 03:56 PM

digital prints when costco has a sale they have like 3 and 4 cents per i think?

not sure about developed film but would think it would be similar?
