you'll probably want to shoot wide open, maybe F2.8/3.5 if you can. Usually people shoot at the widest angle possible, so you get as many stars in your field of vision as possible. Most people have the north star in the picture because all the stars in the sky will rotate around the north star, and it'll give you something to focus on.

I've read somewhere that it's a good idea to take multiple 30 second exposures, and stack them together, as opposed to just leaving your shutter open for 30 minutes.

Anyways, anyone got any pointers for shooting star tails? I'm going to my cabin up near kamloops and it looks like Its going to be clear so going to try and get some star shots

I had an idea that we have a fire pit near the edge of the lake, would it work if I walked out into the middle of the lake with a tripod and faced the camera towards the fire/tree line/Sky would I be able to get the light of the fire as well as the stars? Any settings in terms of ISO and Exposure for that?

Also in doing star tails where do you focus? I have the kit lense and 50mm which would be best?

YouTube "tony Northrup" and his channel. Look for the one about star photography. Thank me later.

Star trails? Go very wide, like a 15mm on FF or 11mm on APS-C, 100~400 ISO, f2.8~f4, shutter speed can be minutes to hours depending on how long you want your star trails to be. Or you can do a timelapse. Focus on infinity.

I think this was a 15 minute exposure with a 15mm f2.8 lens.

Anybody know if softbox lights are outdoor durable? I'm looking at getting a couple for shooting, and working on cars in my unlit backyard, and just need to know if they can withstand the usual Vancouver rain and wind.

Senna in that picture what is the red light coming from? How do you make sure external light sources don't wash out the stars?

so in This Tony Nothrups video on star trails:

he talks about when the camera is released by a remote shutter he is taking numerous "30 second" exposures over 2.5 hours then generating his image from a tonne of different exposures via software

is this how most people do it or is that shot of yours Senna there just 1 single image?

The red light was from a flashlight with a red gel on it. This is a Fraser Valley Astronomy Society meet, and your flashlight must be gelled, as red light preserves your night vision.

My shot is a single exposure.

Global BC | Vancouver photographer's magical photo goes viral

Quote:

A magical photo taken by a Vancouver photographer is going viral online, and attracting international attention.

Photographer Bob Leslie’s image was chosen as National Geographic’s photo of the day Friday, and within a day had more than 10,000 likes and shares.

I'm not sure if 10,000 likes really constitutes "viral"...in fact, I think they're misusing the word entirely.

Great photo though haha

spent my $200 gift certificate @ Broadway Camera.

"Viral" is not defined by number of views, it defines the way something spreads.

I just bought a new camera bag but the dividers it comes with suck. The stitching is crooked and the hard inserts inside aren't the right length so they're flimsy as well. Where can I buy new dividers locally so I can test fit? I like the nylon material ones from the lowepro bags.

Is there a way to record video on the Nikon D90 via wireless remote? The ML-L3 wireless remote only works the shutter for photos :(

Do you guys convert to DNG?

Senna4ever 03-02-2013 01:11 AM

No, DNG should never be used, IMHO.

Why is that? I've been doing a lot of reading about DNG vs RAW, benefits seem reasonable, no loss of data, etc, very open standard, etc. As far as I can tell, the only negative is the increased time it takes to convert the file/import them.

What are your thoughts?

Cactus V5 Shutter Cable for Canon Pentax Samsung - Gadget Infinity

Is this simply a 3.5mm headphone jack cable?

BTW, I'm torn between radiopoppers and the new PW-X... The RP-cube seems so neat but the user reviews aren't that great.

Pretty cool video about how the Gopro came to be

Razor Ramon HG 03-10-2013 10:38 PM

Anyone shooting with a mirrorless system? I'm thinking about upgrading from my D80 to something more pocketable.

One thing I don't like is that many of them don't have an actual viewfinder. Is there currently a camera out there with a good all around bang for your buck + VF?

Ronin 03-10-2013 11:05 PM

I just bought a Panasonic GH2 for $400.

LiquidTurbo 03-10-2013 11:49 PM

Just picked up a retina MBP. Sick SICK machine for editing photos. So fast. Churns through RAW files like nobody's business.

Can't wait to hook it up to a thunderbolt display.

Senna4ever 03-11-2013 12:19 AM

Nice! But I wish they hadn't gotten rid of the 17" MBP....I don't like the small 15" form factor.
