my friend just bought a Canon SD200 from FS..it's only $350 or
sth...3.2 mp, large screen, very slim and good quality...

you should try Broadway Camera in Aberdeen Center, I know you
are white and that place is owned by chinese, but you get good
price and service.

Anyone know what the Nikon D50 feels like? is it bigger then the Rebel XT? does it have the same plastic feel as the XT?

BiggyD, I recommend you go to a futureshop or best buy or london drugs or some other type of store with a photo/video section and just browse through the SLR's. They all have their own feel to them and everyone's got different hands, so not everyone fits everything. I've only held/used a Canon Rebel, Rebel XT and 20D and I found the older Rebel more solid feeling than the XT, and the XT was too small. The 20D feels like a tank compared to those two. I can't comment on the Nikon's.

Forgot to mention: Your buck will usually extend a lot further if you can find used equipment. A lot of people buy cameras new and then decide they dont want/need/like them, same goes for lenses.

I would go into futureshop except I live on Saltspring Island, and all we have here is a radioshack, they don't have any camera's in stock over $200. but thanx for the feed back...

Know any local websites that have a big photography buy/sell? I can't find one on google...

I am looking at buying a new Digital Camera and I need some advise?
- I Am looking at spending no more then 600 Max.But more in the ranges of 300-400$

I do a lot of dirtbiking and downhill biking so I want a camera that takes nice clear steady pics even when in motion,and where the glare from the lights in the background won't ruin the picture and a camera with a nice zoom in feature...

What camera do you guys recomend ???
*POST Pics/Price/Location/Specs/Links exc
Thanks !!!

Ideally you'd want a 3CCD camera. However, the cheapest they tend to run are roughly $700 or so.

Anything below $600 will net you a basic, run-of-the-mill camcorder. Try to get one that records on the Mini-DV format. Hi-8 and S-VHS, though cheaper, give fairly low quality recordings. DVD and Hard Drive recorders are a lot more expensive and only gives you a restricted recording space... often much less than that offered for tape-based cameras.

If you're going to want a relatively steady shot, then you might be scapping the edges of the barrel trying to find a good camera. You'll need something equipped with an internal digital steady cam option. At that price range, they may not necessarily be all that great. And, remember, if you're going to be filming while on your bike, it'll be shaky even if you have a proper optical stabilizer.

Another thing, don't even take a camera's "Digital zoom" number into count. Always look at the optical zoom.

Camera brands in the higher end of the low-budget spectrum that I would recommend are JVC and Panasonic.

One camera I would recommend is the Sony DCR-HC21.

I'm typically more of a Canon fan over Sony but at this price range, I'd take a Sony instead.

Well decide because many photo cameras can do videos and many video cameras can do photos.. but none of them do both well.

I'm no photography expert but playing around with point and shoot digital cameras, Canons never let me down. I love their color.

Yeah, most of the digital video cameras I've used take terrible pictures ... I've seen some digital cameras take half decent videos, but they're very limited in terms of memory, so you can only record so much.

As mentioned earlier, Canon is a good choice. My parents have an Elph series camera (SD200, IIRC) that takes great pics. Nice and compact, too.

How much zoom do you need, exactly ? Most digital cameras only feature 3x or 4x zoom, which is good enough for a lot of people, but not enough for some people.

OH. Two common digital camera traps.

The Megapixel trap: Don't buy a camera based on megapixel. Pick a megapixel level that is right for you and get something equal or better. Many first time digital camera shoppers look for a value (like horsepower) to compare cameras and megapixels is it. Megampixels is image size, not how nice your pictures will look. My canon 3.2 will kick a casio 5.0 in quality. Keep in mind depending on what size picture you print, a 3.5 won't make a difference with a 5 megapixel. What a larger megapixel will let you do is print larger pictures. It will also let you crop a portion of your picture to develop. As the image is bigger, it lets you take out some of the edges and still stay nice.

A big F U to the digital zoom trap: This is the worst trap of them all. I'll just tell you about my sony video camera I have. It has 20x optical zoom and 200x digital zoom. 20x looks great. I can 200x in on neighbors 2 blocks away but I get a blob of color depending on wht color the house is. What digital zoom is, even tho it sounds cool, is using a computer to grab a portion of your picture and blowing it up. Much like you would do in Photoshop to blow up a picture (which decreases quality). Heres the kicker... there is no condition where you would use optical zoom. Can't get close enough? Take a picture with optical zoomed in and crop it later. At least you have a nice image that isn't screwed up. Photoshop can handle blowing up a picture better than a little chip in your camera.

As was said, Megapixels are still important, but not the end-all-be-all spec of a camera.

You should first determine the size of pictures you want, then look at all the cameras within that megapixel range.

As a general guideline, you should look at the following Megapixel ranges (or higher) for these size pictures.

4"x6"
Minimum = 0.5 MP
Good = 1.3 MP

5"x7"
Minimum = 0.8 MP
Good = 2.0 MP

8"x10", 8"x11.5" or 8"x12"
Minimum = 2.0 MP
Good = 5.0 MP

10"x15"
Minimum = 3.1 MP
Good = 7.9 MP

12"x18"
Minimum = 4.4 MP
Good = 11.3 MP

16"x24"
Minimum = 7.9 MP
Good = 20.2 MP

So, basically, what this means is that if you're only going to make 4"x6" prints from it, a higher quality 2.0 MP camera will serve you better than a lower quality 4.0 MP camera. However, if you go up to 8"x10" prints, you would probably be better off with the 4.0 MP camera.
