Nikon did the right thing by dropping the prices on the D50 body/D50 kit... I bet they've gained quite a bit of market share during this x'mas season although the XT's dropped a bit as well so who knows.

does this mean that i shouldn't even get at 5.0mp camera? i think i'm mostly going to develop pictures that are 5" x 7" or a bit bigger. if i were to take 5"x7" pictures with a 5.0mp camera, would it still turn out okay? if i were to go as far as 6.0mp, that's wrong right? from what i read, 7.0mp is out of the question. i'm a total newbie at this and any comments and insight would be great. thanks!

how much more expensive is a hoya UV filter compared to a B+W uv filter.

Hoya SMCs are expensive

B+W is even more so. The Hoya multi-coating is very hard to clean, and if not cleaned properly, the filter can be made as bad as any of the cheaper brands. Mechanical build quality sucks compared to the German makers, too.

any reason I shouldn't buy a Canon Powershot S2 IS? like anything the same price range but takes sharper/clearer pics?

If you read reviews the closest camera that is around the smae price range is the panasonic FZ-5. When i was selecting which camera to buy i was looking at both cameras. Image quality is about the same, even though fz-5 uses a leica (bling bling) lens. The reason i bought the s2 over the fz-5 is that fz-5 uses panasonic's own batteries plus there isnt a manual focus feature.

is there any brands that is cheeper than B+W but have better built than a hoya UV filter? i want one for my S2. If i scratch the lens, the whole camera is messed then. So i sorta want a good filter but not a filter thats gonna break the bank.

Heliopan are cheaper, but not by much. Both brands use the same glass.

how is tha Minolta Dimage G530 i picked one up on boxing day.still waitingf for it.

so am i looking at a 52mm UV filter to be in the $40 bux? compared to hoya's $27

a cheap UV filter by Tiffen at 52mm will cost you about 20 bucks, so yeah, a decent multicoated one would be around 40~50.

If you get the Hoya one make sure it's the HMC or SHMC lineup, they're not bad.

Just stay clear of Tiffen.

if u dont mind ebay, u can get pretty good deals on B+W stuff for about the same price as muti coated hoya locally

What digital camera in the $300-400 range do you folks recommend that takes decent quality photos and lets a newbie like me learn the basics of photography? Thanks!

i just found out that my dad's olympus OM1/OM2 lenses that he has all have hoya UV filters on it, and his lens hood is old school lol.. you put it on and tighten it to the lens with a thumb screw haha

I've got one coming in too. The Hoya Green-Series C-PL.

The OM1/2 cameras are legendary.
