Saw this at the Sony store the other day. Is this worth the price, or are there other point and shoot cameras that are better?

haha yea, 49mm lens with great great great optical capabilites. At the time OM serires from olympus was > nikon cameras.

Olympus lenses were used for military air survalance cameras.

Hey guys,

I'm looking for a new camera, photography is sort of an amateur hobby of mine, and I'm certainly not that good. I'd like a simple point and shoot, I prefer doing most of my tweaking in Photoshop.

Things important to me:

1) Physical size/weight... the smaller the better.

2) Price... preferably under $350ish new.

3) Speed... both between pushing the button and recording a picture and between taking photos.

4) Megapixels... I'm not planning on blowing these up to poster size so realistically anything 3.0+ is probably plenty.

Any recomendations?

Don't you hate to re-learn everything you knew before only to keep up with the "latest and greatest"....

Anyway, it's time to retire my 35mm and go digital, hell yeah.

Here's the question: which one? I don't make my living taking pictures, it's more of a serious hobby.

I've been a big Minolta fan for years, now it's all history (insert tear drop here ). I tried few times to convert myself to EOS but I just can't stand the "plasticky" feel to it, no offence to you all CANON users, they're great cameras.

I don't want to invest a lot for start, but whatever I go with must definitely have a nice expansion area (lenses and such).

I wonder if I could hear some opinions before I shell out $$. My startup budget would be around CAN$ 1500 or so - what would be the best bang for the buck? Best places to shop (prices/selection/support)?

Any input will be greatly appreciated, thanks for looking

I really don't thinnk there is any camera on sale right now that doesnt' meet these requirements.

Minolta leaving Canada sucked ass. All my equipment is Minolta.

You best bet is probably a Canon Rebel XT, 20D (this might come in a bit over $1500) or a Nikon D50/70 depending on kit lens.

If I were to buy a dSLR now, I'd save up a bit more and get a D200 or wait a bit more and see what kind of dSLR SONY & Konica Minolta are cooking up... I must say that I hate the menu-centric controls of Canons & Nikons.

Right but I'm looking for a camera that excels at all of those things, in the order that I wrote them in.

While everything on the market does all of those things, still some are clearly better than others, and that's what I want to know!

I rather go for Nikon; it somehow feels better (heavier??) and much more solid than entry_level Canon.

I also quite like the feel and functionality of Olympus Evolt 500, not bad specs at all at the price, but there's not much of additional equimpment available, correct me if I'm wrong.

I guess I'll wait a bit, maybe till springtime to see what's cooking.

Never really used one, but it looks pimp and I love the fact that you can do video as long as you want (limited only by the memory card). But if you want to get into some serious photography, DSLR is the way to go

Hi guys I am new into photography...

Currently I have a Fuji Finepix S5000... I love that camera but I think the limits on that thing is barely cutting it for me now...

want to move on to something little more advanced...

so I am looking at Fuji S9000 now... the specs looked quite sweet, but however do you guys think it's a good idea to get that camera and/or should I just get a real DSLR instead ?

I love Fuji cameras and already have most of the fuji compatible accessories so changing to other brands is out of question for me.

A DSLR can be a handy tool, but if you're going to be using it as a point and shoot then why spend all of the extra cash? You have to think about whether or not you need the features of a DSLR, or whether or not you have the time to learn how to use one properly.

Point and shoot's are so good these days (and comparatively cheap) that it might be a lot more convenient to just buy a good P+S. For one, they're ALWAYS much smaller. It's hard to fit a dslr and a lens into your pocket.

I know nothing about cameras or photography but what's a good lightweight and small camera that is just used for everyday pictures type of thing? Price range is around $500 or so.

At least 5 megapixels and has to be small. Also I would like the speed from taking the picture to when I can take it again to be quick as my old camera takes forever.

Funny thing, back then I originally was looking at the S5000 as well but as soon as I grabbed the little thing and turned it on and took some shots with it, I knew right away it wasn't going to be enough for me (in terms of speed and ergonomics).

It really depends on what you're going to be doing with your camera and your decision should be based on that.

If you're just gonna use AUTO mode on an SLR, then yes, you might as well save the money and get a decent P&S instead. Keep in mind that you'll be spending more money down the road as you learn more and more about photography and crave more and more for high-grade lenses, it's natural, albeit unecessary in a lotta cases .

Tell us more about what you'd like to shoot and what you plan to do with the camera so we can offer you better suggestions as far as what kinda stuff you should get.

It's a fun hobby / art form so even if you shoot with a P&S you can still get amazing shots.

I'd like to shoot animals, cars, and sometimes portraits... like people and stuff...

I got quite a bit hang of it on playing around with shutter speed and aperture.... I rarely use the auto mode on the S5000...

but then the things is that camera's specs are kinda falling behind me.
- 3 MPX effective (althought it does have a mode that says 6MP)
- only up to ISO400 for full resolution, ISO800 is 1MP only
- No cable release adaptor nor flash hotshoe

so I am kind of debating on rather to get the S9000 or just get a real DSLR... but then again I don't want to spend that much...

my first digicam is the fujifilm S602, which is quite a good digicam...the specs are similar to your S5000,

but after i have been using SLRs (eventually DSLRs)

i just can't go back to it. it now sits there and my brother uses it only once in a while (cos he doesnt' know about cameras)

the most aparent difference between a DSLR and a digicam is the viewfinder.

after using a real optical viewfinder, i think its impossible to go back to LCD screens.

but that's only what i think.

im in the same debate with the s9000, up there with the best as the last step before going DSLR.. its a hard camera to look past. it has alot of features and options that no other camera I think can compare before going DSLR..
