Hi guys,
My old Optio S got water spilled all over it.. now it doesn' t work.. but thats ok... it took blurry pics anyways.

I'm looking for a new Digi Cam

heres my criteria:

- can autofocus w/out having the flash turned on (optio s couldnt do it.. sux to have flash in the daytime..ppl think ur stupid)
- small size, slim
- around 5 mp range
- records vids around the 240x 320 range.. 480 by 640 wouldn't be bad either
- doesn't have much noise when taking pictures in a setting w/out a lot of lighting
- price range.. hoping not more than 300-400$

i hope that's enough information for your average joe to take pictures on vacation.

I'm currently using the camera on my sharp 903, it takes some nice pictures.. but i'm sure theres a digi cam that could knock it off it's feet.

I second this. Leica optics and a 28mm (35mm equivalent) wide-angle lens. The Fujifilm Finepix F30 has awesome high ISO capability and the Canon SD430 is good too, but they do not have the 28mm wide end.

funny thing i've used all 3 of these cameras! one from school, one is my sisters, and one is my friends.

nikon d50..to me it seems like it doesnt compete with the rebel, the d70s is the rebels competition. anyways, if you know how to use the camera and use all the custom functions you'll be great with it. oh and since its so sturdy it feels great in your hand. + it has the rubber covering! very ergonomic, i love the placings of the buttons and the dual select knobs..front and back.

the olympus i havent touched as much cause its my sisters but it has some nifty features.. the sensor cleaning feature is really cool and its a first in the dslr market.. and the lenses are digital lenses..i dont really know how to explain...it...anyways...it has very cool features that normally come with point and shoots and if you need help making the transition from P&S to DSLR go for this one..my gripe? it has a cheap plastic feel to it and feels like you could scratch it up so easily.the rough kinda plastic, know what i mean?

rebel...what can i say, better iso quality than the D50 thats for sure, against the olympus im not so sure.great iso quality...bang on awb... gripe? its small and once again has that cheap plastic build quality to it.....but produces great results. get the battery grip if you think about getting this.

in the end, try to see if you can get all 3 together on a table and just hold them, play with them, put them up to your eye, try out the different lenses and see whihc one you feel most comfortable with beacuse talking and talking means nothing without feeling and seeing and trying. :-)

I'd take the D50, great, great camera and it can do whatever you want it to do as long as you know what you're doing.

The 2 lenses are better than their Canon counterparts so you're really getting a good deal there.

ISO 1600 is clean clean clean on the D50, no worries. If you don't plan on going over 1000 bucks then the D50 with 2 lenses is the best deal out of the three. I shot with one for 1 year and have nothing but praises for it.

Nikon also has some AMAZING pro lenses too, if you ever intended on getting some. Their cameras are WAY more comfortable than Canons as well.

Only reason I switched to Canon is for sports and a 5 fps motor drive within my budget - something the D200 isn't and the D80 should've been.

But yeah, noise is NOT a problem with the D50, it's one of the cleanest in the Nikon lineup, I'll even say it's pretty close to some of Canon's cameras from what I've seen so far.

Get a D50, you'll love it.

HOWEVER

If you have more friends with Canon cameras and can borrow their lenses when you need them, then you may want to look into the XT as well, great camera but is too small for a lot of people... so you might want to play with it before making the decision.

They're all great cameras, just pick the one that fits your budget and one that you feel most comfortable with - I mean, you WILL be using that thing for many, many hours.

i see that the panasonic came out in 2004, does age of a camera make much of a idfference, or is it just the lense quality that matters?

also, what is your take on sony cybershot cameras? their main appeal to me is mostly the thin size, and i guess a more popular name? I didn't even know panasonic made cameras...but i will do soome more reading up on it, they do take nice pictures

Try reading the reviews on megapixel.net or dpreview...then go try the cameras at a stre, preferably at a smaller store where the staff can spend more time with you.

i'm poking around the buy/sells, ebay, etc. and find about $100-150 difference in price between the canon s2 is and the s3. for a relative beginner (i want to start taking photography a little more seriously than the small fashionable cameras, but i'm not ready to jump into dslr), is it worth my while to get the s3, or should i sacrifice the one extra megapixel, etc and get the s2?
