I just bought a Panasonic FX01 with 2 year warranty applicable in Canada from JR.com for $270US including shipping (includes brokerage fee but no duties/gst)
I figure including duties..I'll end up paying around $350CAD all in which is still cheaper than buying in Canada.
Will let you guys know it goes.

That's what most of us do. Buy in the states and ship them up here. Camera equipment in Canada is really expensive

Alright, i'm trying to decide between these two cameras. Just wondering what your thoughts are on both of them and which one you would choose and the reason.
Canon SD 800IS and Panasonic DMC FX50
Price is about the same.

I recently got myself a Panasonic FZ-7. Other than being noisy above 80iso I really like this camera. The long zoom is fantastic.
I'm going to Japan in 2 weeks and a vacation like that is rare for me. I'm looking forward to taking lots and lots of pictures. Looking at recent sales of the Canon XT, I can't help but feel tempted to get a dslr right now. The larger sensor, capable of producing cleaner images and better low light capabilities are very attractive features. The image stabilizer on my pano is nice but it doesn't stop things from moving.
Now I'm not a pro photographer and obviously not going to learn the tool in two weeks before I go on my trip. I'm strictly going to 'point and shoot' during my stay in Japan. I'm not getting a new camera just for the trip. I wanted a dslr for a while now and I figure this is as good a time as any.
So should I take my point and shoot to Japan to 'point and shoot' or buy an XT and use it like a newbie in Japan?
Thanks :P

^^^ The SLR's can be used as P&S camera too. They're quite easy to use once you throw them into P mode. Once the camera meters it setups up all your settings automatically.
I rather they put S for stupid or N for noob.

Okay guys, i've defintely narrowed it down to either the Canon A540 ( http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/spec...canon_a540.asp) or the Panasonic DMC-LZ5 ( http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/spec...nic_dmclz5.asp).
Canon: Better image quality (from what I've read), optical viewfinder.
Pansonic: 6x optical zoom lens, image stabilization feature.
I'm leaning towards the Panasonic at this point. I'd appreciate any last minute opinions before I pick one up tomorrow. Thanks |

Test both before buying!. Take a memory card and take similar pics and look at the pics on a monitor. Then make your decision.

So update..
I couldn't decide between the Panasonic DMC-LZ5 and Canon A540, so I bit the bullet and spent more money, and got a camera with all the functions I wanted. Got the Canon A710IS. Got my 6x optical zoom, image stabilization, optical viewfinder and good picture quality |

| buying a digital camera
Hello everyone
I don't know much about cameras at all. My girlfriend is looking for one for christmas and I thought perhaps it may be a gift idea. She would only use it for basic aim and fire stuff. Not into photography at all. So anything beyond turning it on and zoom and fire, chances are those features wont' be used. She takes pics of peopel most of the time. Nothing too scenic, perhaps occaisionally. I need suggestions please! Not sure what my budget is but for sure don't want to spend over 5 bills after taxes. And she decided to stay with the 35mm lens over teh 28mm. let me know
TIA

hmm, aim and fire... is that anything like a "point and shoot"?
Joking aside, look at the Panasonic Lumix DMCFX01S. Its a great p&s camera. It's quick, responsive, and small, 6 megapixels, 6x optical zoom, optical Image Stabilization, and the Leica name on the lens doesn't hurt (admitedly, you're not going to get a phoenominal lens for that price mark, but it's still pretty good).
The Source has got it going for 399.99, so that should fit your budget.
The controls are pretty straight forward. http://www.thesourcecc.com/estore/Pr...roduct=2513367

My Panasonic FX01 arrived last week..took 3 days to ship from US.
Basically everything including shipping and duties cost me CAD$338 and that includes 2 year replacement warranty.
I'm really happy with it.
Basically if I turn the resolution of pics from 6 to 3 megapixel..optical zoom can go up to 5.5x with no loss in quality.
Great camera plus IS really helps as I tended to have lots of blurred pics with my SD400. However, noise is more noticable than the Canon, especially in dim lit places (clubs).
Nice bright LCD and very small. The wide angle lens is a bonus.

I got it from JR.com. THe lowest price I could find that would ship to Canada and no brokerage fees.
It was $219US and $30 for shipping, $30 for replacement warranty. Then $36CAD for duty.
It would be lot cheaper if you ship it to Point Roberts and pick it from up there.
